Proud of my heroic father

Mr. Nguyen Van Lan, born in 1977, is the son of martyr and People's Armed Forces Hero Nguyen Xuan Kim, from Lac Long commune (Kinh Mon). Martyr Nguyen Xuan Kim fell on February 17, 1979, when China officially began attacking Vietnam along the entire northern border.

His father passed away when he was less than 2 years old, so all the information and images about his father, Lan only got through the stories of his mother and his father's comrades in the Military Council that he voluntarily joined. Growing up without his father, Lan said he was always proud because his father was a hero. And the advice "Grow up quickly to help your mother, help your sister" that his father left for his mother before he left and stayed forever in the border was used as a guideline for his life later. And he did it, just like his father's message years ago.

Martyr, Hero of the People's Armed Forces Nguyen Xuan Kim, born in 1952, at the time of his death on February 17, 1979, he was a sergeant major, acting Captain of Company 6, Battalion 2, Regiment 192, Hoang Lien Son Local Army, Military Region 2. Not only did he fight and heroically sacrifice himself at the northern border, from June 1972 to April 1975, he fought in the Tri - Thien battlefield and achieved many outstanding achievements.

Mrs. Nguyen Thi Khach, wife of martyr Nguyen Xuan Kim, said that her husband, like thousands of others, lived a life of wartime men, ready to leave when the Fatherland needed him and then rest in peace. Her husband fought in the fiery Tri-Thien battlefield and returned safely, but could not escape this war.

According to sources, in February 1979, Mr. Kim's unit was assigned to hold the Coc San post, Bat Xat district ( Lao Cai ). On February 17, the enemy sent a battalion with artillery and tank support, divided into many groups, from many directions, to fiercely attack the battlefield. Mr. Kim calmly commanded the unit, waiting for the enemy to come close before opening fire, killing many of them. Mr. Kim was wounded but bandaged himself and continued fighting. After being wounded for the second time, he fainted. When he regained consciousness, he continued to command the unit, organizing forces to attack the enemy's flank and rear. After being wounded for the third time, due to the seriousness of the wound, he fainted many times, but each time he regained consciousness, he still commanded the unit to fight. When he saw the enemy approaching, he used all his remaining strength to get up, using grenades and AK submachine guns to attack directly into the enemy formation. In this battle, the unit commanded by Mr. Kim broke 8 enemy attacks, killed over 200 enemies, of which Mr. Kim himself was credited with killing 60 enemies. He died after successfully completing his mission.

Thanks to his outstanding achievements, he was awarded the Third Class Military Exploit Order, the Second Class Military Exploit Order, and twice the title of Brave Hero. On December 20, 1979, martyr Nguyen Xuan Kim was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces by the President .

Dad must have smiled.

In addition to his son Nguyen Van Lan mentioned above, martyr, Hero of the People's Armed Forces Nguyen Xuan Kim also had an older daughter, Nguyen Thi Lien, born in late 1972. Although her father was a martyr and did not have to join the army, after graduating from high school, Lien still applied to join the army and became a professional lieutenant colonel of Division 363, Air Defense - Air Force. When her father went to fight in the Tri - Thien battlefield, Lien was still in her mother's womb. Around 1976, when Mr. Nguyen Xuan Kim returned to visit his hometown, he told his wife:

- After such a long walk, if we met on the street, Lien wouldn't recognize her dad, right?

After that time, Mr. Kim went to the border and never returned to see his family. According to Mrs. Nguyen Thi Khach, during the time Mr. Kim participated in the Northern border war, all members of the family were anxious with one question: Why did everyone receive letters but Mr. Kim was nowhere to be found?

One time, a neighbor named Sang came to our house and said: I heard on the radio that our uncle Kim had died. But it wasn't until June 1981 that the death notice was sent...

His sister had escaped, so Lan stayed with his grandparents and mother and started a career in his hometown. Lan also intended to join the army, but his father was a martyr and his sister was in the army, so he could not carry out his intention. To hear stories about his heroic father, he applied to join his father's military council in the commune.

After getting married, having children and starting a business in his hometown, Mr. Lan now has a spacious and comfortable house. In addition to 1 hectare of onions and garlic and making traditional wine, Mr. Lan is also building a factory to dry onions and garlic. With a good economy , he has 1 son who graduated from university and is working in Hanoi. The other son is a student at Hai Phong Medical University.

Although he has no memories of his heroic father, Mr. Lan believes that he and Ms. Lien have done well what their father told them and perhaps martyr and Hero of the People's Armed Forces Nguyen Xuan Kim smiled when his children grew up.
