At this time, many livestock households in Ha Tinh are focusing on increasing their herds and fattening their specialty livestock to promptly supply the market for the Lunar New Year of Giap Thin in 2024.
Mr. Truong Van Thang's family in Thien No village, Cam Quan commune (Cam Xuyen) has nearly 50 wild boars ready for sale, each weighing an average of 15 - 27 kg. This is a specialty that the market "hunts" for during Tet, so Mr. Thang is not in a hurry to sell.
Mr. Truong Van Thang's wild boar herd in Cam Quan commune (Cam Xuyen) is being fattened to sell for Tet.
In addition to wild boars, Mr. Thang also has more than 100 black H'Mong chickens and 500 native chickens ready to supply the Tet market. Currently, wild boars cost 130,000 VND/kg, black chickens cost 150,000 VND/kg, and native chickens cost 120,000 VND/kg. With this price, Mr. Thang's family expects to earn over 150 million VND during the Tet season.
Mr. Truong Van Thang shared: “I raise wild boars, black chickens, and free-range chickens on my family’s farm of more than 7 hectares. The wild boars have been raised for more than a year, so their meat is firm and delicious. Many customers have asked to buy them, but I haven’t sold them yet because I want to save them for Tet. At this time, I also increase nutrition for the pigs and chickens to bring the best quality food source to consumers.”

Along with farmers in Cam Xuyen district, currently, farmers in the mountainous district of Huong Khe are also focusing on taking care of specialty animals to supply the market for the Lunar New Year. According to statistics from the Huong Khe District Farmers' Association, the whole district currently has nearly 50 models of raising specialty animals such as bamboo rats, wild boars, civets, sturgeons, etc. Raising specialty animals is a sustainable direction to help farmers develop their economy , so the local government has also increased support in care techniques, consulting on access to support policies, and credit loans to develop models.
Wild boar farming model of Mr. Le Xuan Truong in Huong Binh commune (Huong Khe)
Having invested in a wild boar farming model for more than a year, Mr. Le Xuan Truong in Binh Ha village, Huong Binh commune (Huong Khe) shared: “Wild boar is an easy-to-consume product with a fairly stable price. My family borrowed from the bank to build a barn, invested in raising 6 breeding wild boars and 60 commercial wild boars. During the raising process, I prioritize choosing natural food sources from agricultural by-products and supplementing nutrients through nutritional bran to make the product delicious. Up to this point, 100% of my family's pigs have been ordered by customers at a price of over 3 million VND/pig."
Not only wild boar, Dong Tao chicken is also sought after by many people during Tet. Therefore, in recent years, more and more farmers have raised them. This Tet, Dong Tao chicken farm of Mr. Nguyen Chan Sang (residential group 12, Thach Ha town) has more than 200 Dong Tao chickens for sale to the market (on average, each chicken weighs from 4 to 4.5 kg). With the selling price of 300,000 VND/kg of chicken meat and 2 to 4 million VND/rooster, Mr. Sang's family expects to earn over 200 million VND.
Mr. Nguyen Chan Sang in Thach Ha town has more than 200 Dong Tao chickens.
Mr. Nguyen Chan Sang said: “Dong Tao chicken is also known as the king's chicken, so it is sought after by customers as a Tet gift. According to ancient beliefs, any family that chooses Dong Tao chicken to worship on New Year's Eve will have a prosperous year. In particular, enjoying the meat of this king's chicken also shows the luxury and nobility of the homeowner, so more and more people choose to buy it. Currently, not only customers in the province but also in provinces such as Nghe An, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, and Ho Chi Minh City have contacted to place orders. Customers mainly buy in pairs or buy roosters as Tet gifts. In addition, we also supply chicken meat to many restaurants in Ha Tinh.”
According to preliminary statistics from the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine of Ha Tinh, in the province there are currently hundreds of households raising specialty animals such as wild boar, Dong Tao chicken, goat, deer, bamboo rat, weasel, snail... To supply the Tet market, at this time, livestock households in general, and households raising specialty animals in particular, have increased their herds by about 30%. Developing models of raising specialty animals not only brings high economic efficiency to people but also contributes to providing consumers with more quality specialties to use during Tet.
In recent years, Ha Tinh farmers have tended to raise new livestock species to increase economic value... To improve efficiency in livestock farming and limit risks, farmers need to carefully study the characteristics, habits, and living environments of these livestock species to have scientific care methods. In addition, farmers need to arrange suitable barns and keep them clean to limit the situation of livestock being infected with diseases, especially diseases related to the digestive tract.
