From plasterer to "owner" of water lily garden
Before coming to water lilies, 33-year-old Vo Viet Tu's life was associated with the hard work of a plasterer with an unstable income. In early 2021, with his father-in-law's teaching and technical support, he invested in planting the first 100 pots of water lilies. While working and studying, he gradually accumulated experience and affirmed his new direction.
Up to now, Mr. Tu has developed two lotus growing facilities in Go Noi commune and Hoa Xuan ward with a total area of more than 4,000m2 , about 6,000 pots, divided into many large lakes.
In particular, he has successfully crossbred many varieties of lotus from Thailand, Australia, America, etc., with bright, rare colors, favored by domestic and foreign markets.
On average, he supplies the market with nearly 100 flower pots every day. The selling price ranges from 25,000 to 300,000 VND/pot, depending on the common type or unique hybrid.

Mr. Tu's water lilies appear in flower and ornamental plant shops, villas and resorts. Some hybrid varieties are also ordered by international customers in Thailand, India and China, who are willing to pay high prices. Thanks to stable output, after deducting expenses, the model brings in an average income of about 200 million VND/year, while creating jobs for 2 local workers.
Anh Tu shared: “Water lilies are easy to grow but require patience and meticulous care techniques. I want to turn this folk hobby into a sustainable livelihood, not only helping my family to be stable but also contributing to spreading the entrepreneurial spirit from agriculture .”
Turning point from basa fish pond
Unlike Mr. Tu, Mr. Ho Van Tri started his business in his old age. Previously, his family was poor, he and his wife worked hard at many jobs but life was still lacking. Participating in activities of local associations, he gradually changed his thinking and determined to find a new path.

In 2023, he received a loan of 7 million VND from the Intergenerational Self-Help Club of Phu Son 1 village to raise snails. However, the model was not effective. Undaunted, in 2024, he continued to borrow 10 million from the club and switched to raising basa fish. With a creative approach, taking advantage of leftover food, after only 12 months, he harvested more than 2 tons of fish, selling for 70 million VND.
From the initial success, in 2025, he expanded the farming area to more than 2,000m2 , investing in 5,000 fish. Currently, the fish are growing well, expected to reach 9 tons, bringing in about 220 million VND.
According to Mr. Tri, basa fish are easy to raise and have low costs thanks to the use of available food sources. After deducting costs, the profit margin can reach 70 - 80%.
“I didn’t think I could start a business at my age, but thanks to the support of the association and perseverance, I found the right direction. I’m happy because now my family is better off, and I have the conditions to take care of my children’s education and growth.”
The lotus growing model of Mr. Tu and basa fish farming of Mr. Tri not only helps the family stabilize the economy but also motivates many farmers to boldly change their production thinking. These effective methods affirm that escaping poverty is not a distant story if you dare to think, dare to do and persistently pursue the goal.
