Raising clean, safe chickens on thick biological bedding

DNO - The model of raising chickens on biological litter by farmers in Lien Chieu ward has shown its effectiveness in reducing pollution, limiting odors, keeping the chickens healthy, less sick, with a high survival rate, and reducing medicine costs. Farmers can save on care, have a source of clean, safe chickens, and at the same time take advantage of organic fertilizer for their crops.

Before applying the new technique, chicken farmers in Lien Chieu ward faced many difficulties such as: damp coops, accumulated chicken manure causing bad odor, affecting both farmers and surrounding residential areas.

Chickens are susceptible to digestive diseases and have a high loss rate, forcing farmers to spend money on antibiotics, increasing prices and reducing meat quality. In addition, cleaning the coop takes a lot of time, making many households hesitant to expand their scale.

Faced with that reality, the Farmers' Association of Lien Chieu Ward coordinated with the Center for Agricultural Extension and Agricultural Techniques of Da Nang City to train 50 households on techniques of raising chickens on biological bedding.

Farmers understand the technical process from selecting raw materials such as rice husks and sawdust, treating them with biological products, to monitoring humidity, temperature and periodically replacing the bedding. At the same time, technical staff instruct on disease prevention and nutritional care methods so that chickens grow quickly, are less susceptible to disease, and increase productivity and quality.

The process of raising chickens on thick biological bedding requires farmers to strictly follow the steps. First, the floor of the coop is cleaned, then a thick layer of rice husk or sawdust is spread on the floor, mixed well with biological products.

During the rearing process, every 7-10 days, the breeder turns the chicken coop and adds products to maintain the activity of microorganisms. This bedding helps decompose chicken manure, keeps the coop dry, and limits odors. Thanks to this, the chicken flock has fewer respiratory and digestive diseases, reduces the use of antibiotics, and provides clean, safe meat products.

After seeing the clear effectiveness, in 2023, Lien Chieu Ward Farmers' Association established a group to raise chickens on thick biological bedding, gathering 20 members to participate.

The entire ward currently has about 3,500 chickens raised in this way. When fully grown, each chicken weighs 2-3kg, and sells for an average price of 115,000 VND/kg. Thanks to the Ward Farmers' Association connecting with traders, the output of products is stable, people feel secure in raising them and have the motivation to expand the scale.

Mr. Tran Van Hai, resident of Van Duong 1, said that his family is currently raising about 400 chickens. “Previously, the coop was dirty, smelly, hard to raise but not profitable. Now, applying the biological bedding model, the chickens are less sick, grow fast, have firm meat, and sell for a good price. Every year, I sell 3 batches, with a stable income, enough to cover family expenses,” Mr. Hai said.

Ms. Tran Thi Nam, Hien Phuoc residential area shared: “Thanks to this model, the chicken coop is clean, does not cause odors affecting the surrounding area. Chicken manure is processed and used as fertilizer for plants, saving costs. I currently raise 200 chickens, and each batch is sold out thanks to the cooperation of traders. I believe this method will be sustainable in the long term.”

Evaluating the effectiveness, Mr. Tran Quang Vinh, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Lien Chieu Ward, said that the model of raising chickens on thick biological litter has fundamentally changed traditional farming habits, helping people solve the problem of pollution, bad odors, and diseases.

“In the coming time, the association will continue to coordinate with specialized units to train and transfer new techniques; at the same time, support suitable seeds and crops, giving priority to disadvantaged households. The goal is not only to develop household economy but also to contribute to building safe and environmentally friendly agriculture in the locality,” said Mr. Vinh.

The model of raising chickens on thick biological litter opens up a new direction for farmers, ensuring environmental hygiene, improving product quality, and creating stable output. This is considered a practical way to develop sustainable livestock farming, increase income, and help farmer members become rich in their homeland.
