Difficult childhood
With 29.75 points in block C, To Thi Dieu (residing in village 3, Quang Thai commune, Quang Xuong district, Thanh Hoa ), a student at Quang Xuong 4 High School (Quang Xuong district) is one of the top students in block C nationwide.
The national top student in block C, To Thi Dieu, not only studies well but also cooks and takes care of her younger siblings while her mother goes to work.
Besides the slim, skinny appearance of valedictorian To Thi Dieu, few people know that her childhood was filled with hardship and worries.
After Dieu is her younger sister who is in school age. Dieu's mother alone worries about "bread and butter" every day so that the two sisters can go to school.
"My father passed away when I was in 3rd grade, from then on, my mother took care of my sister and me by herself. She worked many jobs, sometimes she worked for seafood restaurants in the countryside, sometimes she sold fish at the market, she did everything. Every day, my mother usually left for work before I woke up, and didn't come home until 8 or 9 pm. So since 2nd grade, I cooked for myself, and my sister and I had to take care of our meals and study by ourselves.
I have been passionate about literature since middle school and often read books, especially works by writer Nguyen Nhat Anh. Reading books and literary works helps me have a better vocabulary and learn many humane stories. Reading books also costs a lot of money, so I often read through aap online to save money," Dieu shared.
Dieu's family's small house
Dieu's family is currently a near-poor household. Aware of her family's situation, this valedictorian has prepared for her upcoming university years to help her mother ease the burden of "making ends meet".
"I love my mother, but I only know how to study hard and take care of my younger siblings to help her. I chose to study pedagogy because I was exempted from tuition fees, and I registered to live in a dormitory to save on rent, which also makes it easier for my mother," Dieu said.
Multi-talented female valedictorian
Despite difficult circumstances, her father died early, and her family was near-poor, but throughout the past 12 years of school, Dieu was an excellent student every year. Not only was she a good student, Dieu was also recognized by her friends as a multi-talented person, because she wrote beautifully; drew well; danced well... She also won consolation prizes and second prizes in literature in provincial competitions for excellent students during her high school years.
Dieu decided to study pedagogy so she wouldn't have to pay tuition and live in a dormitory to save on rent and ease the burden of making ends meet for her mother (who was sitting next to Dieu).
Mrs. To Thi Nguyet (50 years old, Dieu's mother) could not hide her joy when her daughter achieved high results in the recent high school graduation exam. She felt that her hard work and worries had paid off, although there were still many difficulties ahead, she was confident that she could provide her daughter with a full education.
“I usually go to work from early morning until late at night, so I have to take care of their studies myself. There are days when I come home late at night, and seeing Dieu diligently reading and studying makes all the hardships disappear. I still overcome the hardship, just worried that she is weak and skinny, and I don’t know what it will be like when she goes to university,” Ms. Nguyet shared.
Teacher Nguyen Thi He, Dieu's homeroom teacher, said that not only is Dieu a good student, but she is also a good and polite student.
“What makes Dieu successful is her own efforts. We, the teachers, are just guides, and Dieu's achievements are what she made herself,” Ms. He shared.
