On January 20, the Republican-led US Senate confirmed Mr. Marco Rubio as the new US Secretary of State as nominated by President Donald Trump.

Mr. Rubio, 53, made history as the first Cuban-American to hold the position.

Mr. Marco Rubio, graduated with a Law degree from the University of Miami School of Law in 1996. While a law student, Mr. Rubio interned in the office of US Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and ran Senator Bob Dole's presidential campaign in Miami-Dade, Florida, USA.

Mr. Rubio's roots in Miami run deep. His parents came to the United States from Cuba in 1956. His father worked as a hotel bartender and his mother as a maid. The family eventually settled in West Miami, and Mr. Rubio attended South Miami Senior High School, where he played football. Before going to law school, he received a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Florida.

Rubio's political career began with his election to the West Miami City Commission. In 2000, he was elected to the Florida House of Representatives and became the first Cuban-American to serve as leader of the Florida House of Representatives in 2007. In 2011, he was elected to the US Senate, a seat he held until becoming US Secretary of State.

As a senator, Mr. Rubio spent time building a foreign policy reputation.

Mr. Rubio also advocated for U.S. military intervention to overthrow Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi and supported bills providing humanitarian aid to Haiti.

In 2012, Mr. Rubio supported Mr. Mitt Romney as the Republican candidate. In 2016, he also ran for office himself, competing with future president Donald Trump.

At a campaign rally in Dallas in February 2016, Mr. Rubio spent about 10 minutes criticizing Mr. Trump, who famously called him “Little Marco” during the race.

Ultimately, Mr. Rubio supported Mr. Trump for president in 2016, and he appears to have grown closer to Mr. Trump over the past few years.

During the first term of the Trump administration, Mr. Rubio was highly regarded for his influence in the Latin American region and carefully calculated foreign policy positions. In an article in the New York Times , famous American journalist Peter Baker called Mr. Rubio "a leading policy architect."

The new Foreign Minister's policy

Mr. Rubio takes office as the new Trump administration faces a more volatile world than when Mr. Trump first took office in 2017.

The fighting in Ukraine continues while America's adversaries become more assertive and united.

Mr. Rubio has previously advocated a strong and tough foreign policy toward America's geopolitical rivals, including China, Iran and Cuba.

During Mr. Trump’s first term, Mr. Rubio co-sponsored a bill that would have made it harder for the president to withdraw the United States from NATO by requiring two-thirds of the Senate to approve the withdrawal.

In previous interviews, Mr. Rubio said that Ukraine needed to focus on peace negotiations rather than territorial recovery.

He voted against former President Joe Biden's $95 billion military aid package to Ukraine, although the aid was eventually approved in April 2024.
