Mr. Srettha Thavisin was elected Prime Minister of Thailand.

With 482 votes in favor, 165 votes against and 81 abstentions, Mr. Srettha Thavisin (Pheu Thai Party) was elected the 30th Prime Minister of Thailand.

On August 22, the Thai National Assembly convened a joint session of the House of Representatives and the Senate to elect a new prime minister. This is the third attempt by the Thai National Assembly to elect a new prime minister since the general election more than 3 months ago. With 482 votes in favor, 165 votes against and 81 abstentions, Mr. Srettha Thavisin (Pheu Thai Party) was elected as the 30th Prime Minister of Thailand. The elected Prime Minister is still awaiting Royal approval.

Mr. Srettha Thavisin, 60 years old, used to be the owner of a real estate corporation. He is not a member of parliament but is one of three prime minister candidates that the Pheu Thai Party registered with the Thai Election Commission before the general election on May 14. According to the Thai Constitution, a prime minister candidate does not necessarily have to be a member of parliament.

In another development, former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was sentenced to eight years in prison by the Supreme Court of Thailand on the same day for abuse of power and misconduct; illegally ordering a state bank to issue foreign loans; and illegally holding shares through a nominee. Mr. Thaksin will be closely monitored during his time in prison due to his current health conditions, including problems with blood pressure, lungs, heart, and spine.
