United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on December 30 highly appreciated the UN peacekeeping mission in Mali as the mission completed its withdrawal from the West African country.

Mr. Guterres emphasized the key role of the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) in promoting the peace process.

According to him, this mission has an important role in ensuring respect for the ceasefire under the 2015 Peace and Reconciliation Agreement, as well as supporting the transition towards "restoration of state authority". He expressed his "deepest gratitude" to the MINUSMA soldiers.

Reaffirming the UN's steadfast support for Mali, Mr. Guterres pledged to continue working with the Malian people towards restoring constitutional order and promoting peace, security and sustainable development in the West African country.

On June 30, the UN Security Council voted to end the decades-long peacekeeping mission in Mali.
