Analytical research on mudstone core samples from Sapphire Canyon, collected by NASA's Perseverance rover in July 2024, has provided promising new evidence in the search for life on Mars.
The study results showed the presence of minerals in mudstone core samples and surface structures associated with microbial activity on Earth.
However, the team also notes that non-biological chemical reactions could also produce similar signals.
Mr. Sean Duffy - Director of NASA, affirmed that this analysis result is the latest breakthrough that scientists have ever achieved in identifying traces of ancient life on Mars, helping to open up a deeper understanding of the Red Planet.
According to Mr. Duffy, NASA is committed to maintaining Gold Standard Science while continuing to pursue the goal of putting humans on Mars.
The mudstone core sample was drilled from a rock called Chevaya Falls, located in the Neretva Vallis area, an ancient river about 400m wide that once flowed into the lake in the Jezero crater.
Immediately after drilling, the Perseverance rover sealed the sample to bring it back to Earth to conduct more in-depth tests of the on-board equipment./.
