On July 25, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital announced that it had just received a rare and complicated case in the digestive field - a patient suffering from two malignant diseases at the same time: colon cancer and rectal cancer.

A 66-year-old male patient from Ninh Binh was hospitalized with symptoms including bowel disorders, constant urge to defecate, bloody stools, mucus in stools, and rapid weight loss within the past 3 months.

With typical symptoms of digestive diseases, patients are examined in depth through a modern diagnostic system to assess their overall condition to help determine the stage of the disease and indicate appropriate surgery.

Colonoscopy results detected a large tumor located in the rectum, about 10cm from the anus and a second tumor located in the right colon, about 2cm smaller.

According to Dr. Pham Hoang Ha - Head of the Department of Digestive Surgery, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital - the patient is a special case diagnosed with both rectal and colon cancer - a rare situation with a rate of only about 2 - 5% in colorectal cancer.

After specialist consultation, the patient was indicated for laparoscopic surgery to resect the colon and rectum containing the tumor and remove all metastatic lymph nodes in the abdomen.

With modern endoscopic surgery techniques and specialized skills, the surgery went smoothly, removing the tumor, preserving function and helping the patient recover quickly.

From the rare cases of colon and rectal cancer, Dr. Ha warned people to go for early check-ups when there is a change in bowel habits, bloody stools, mucus in stools, unexplained weight loss. Or there are risk factors such as colon polyps, ulcerative colitis, family history of colorectal cancer in particular and gastrointestinal cancer in general.

"Regular screening with colonoscopy every year is an effective measure to detect and completely treat colorectal cancer early," Dr. Ha recommended.
