German police announced on January 13 that they are investigating recent sightings of strange unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) at two military bases in the country.

Police in the southern German state of Bavaria said they and prosecutors are investigating several incidents, including UAVs flying over military facilities in the two urban areas of Manching and Neuburg an der Donau, according to AFP.

On January 12, police discovered 10 UAVs in a protected military area in Manching, which has a military airport and is home to Eurofighter jets.

Witnesses also saw several UAVs at the same location on December 16 and 18, 2024. On December 19, authorities discovered three UAVs in Neuburg an der Donau, also at an air base.

Police said they had launched “extensive investigations” into the incidents as they could not rule out the possibility of spying on military facilities and defense companies amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. However, police have not yet been able to determine who was operating the UAVs.

Der Spiegel reported that the German government plans to amend the Aviation Security Act this week, as UAVs are resistant to jamming transmitters and UAVs are detected in German skies.

The move will allow German forces to shoot down UAVs, and soldiers will be allowed to shoot down suspicious devices with ground-based air defense systems. Fighter jets will also be able to destroy unidentified UAVs with guided missiles, according to Der Spiegel .

In addition, Bloomberg news agency quoted several sources as saying that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's cabinet is expected to approve a draft amendment to the Aviation Security Act on January 15.
