Previously, on June 13, 2025, the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism issued a Decision to establish a National Council for Film Selection to participate in the Oscars Preliminary Round for the 2025-2026 term.
With the responsibility of selecting national representative films according to the Charter 16 of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Council met, discussed and voted. As a result, the film "Red Rain" was highly trusted, becoming the representative of Vietnam to attend the Preliminary Round of the 98th International Feature Film Awards - Oscars.
Set in the revolutionary war, "Red Rain" realistically and movingly recreates the nation's tragic history, honoring the bravery and sacrifice of soldiers. The film impresses with its humanistic storytelling, elaborate images, emotional music, and convincing acting by the cast.
Director Dang Thai Huyen, who has been involved in war-themed films for many years, has skillfully harmonized the epic spirit with a close, modern perspective, making the work not only touch the hearts of domestic audiences but also connect with international audiences.
The fact that a Vietnamese film was submitted to the 98th Oscars is an important opportunity for the country's cinema to be introduced and widely promoted to international friends. This is also a step to affirm the increasingly strong position of Vietnamese cinema in the integration process, while opening up opportunities to learn and exchange with world cinema.
According to the Decision of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the People's Army Cinema will coordinate with the Cinema Department to complete the dossier and send the films with English subtitles to the Oscars Organizing Committee before the prescribed deadline.
Many Vietnamese films have been submitted to the International Feature Film category at the Oscars, such as: The Scent of Green Papaya (1993), Ao Lua Ha Dong (2006), I See Yellow Flowers on the Green Grass (2016), Hai Phuong (2019)... Although they have not won any awards, their participation has been an important milestone, helping Vietnamese films become more widely known in the international arena.
