Vietnam's Old Quarter tops list of most beautiful historical centers in Asia

Vietnam's Hoi An ancient town has just been honored as the most beautiful historical center in Asia by French online travel platform Tourlane.

The list, published in early September by Tourlane , was evaluated based on four criteria: walking space, age of formation, cost of visit and popularity on social networks.

Hoi An ( Da Nang City) tops the Asian list thanks to its well-preserved 16th-century architecture, affordable entrance fees and convenient walking space.

Tourlane describes Hoi An as one of the best-preserved ancient towns in Southeast Asia, featuring small street corners lit by thousands of colorful lanterns.

Located in the lower reaches of the Thu Bon River in the coastal plain, nearly 30km south of Da Nang City, Hoi An was once known by many different names such as Lam Ap, Faifo or Hoai Pho.

Today, this ancient city still preserves nearly 1,360 architectural relics almost intact, including: streets, houses, assembly halls, communal houses, pagodas, temples, clan houses, wells and mausoleums. All of them represent the traditional Vietnamese art features and are symbols of the East-West cultural exchange.

Over the centuries, the customs, rituals, cultural and religious activities as well as traditional cuisine of Hoi An have been preserved and conserved with many generations of residents of the old town.

Hoi An is also popular with foreign tourists because of its fresh, peaceful nature and small suburban villages that practice crafts such as carpentry and pottery.

On December 4, 1999, in Marrakech (Morocco), the 23rd session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee officially included Hoi An ancient town in the list of World Cultural Heritage.
