The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has just submitted a document requesting the Ministry of Construction to review, conduct procedures for appraisal and approval of the planning dossier of Cam Ranh International Airport for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050 according to regulations.

Accordingly, Cam Ranh International Airport in Bac Cam Ranh Ward, Khanh Hoa Province, in the period of 2021 - 2030, will have a 4E airport level and a level I military airport; capacity of 25 million passengers/year and 50,000 tons of cargo/year; aircraft types: B747, B777, B787, A321, A350 and equivalent or lower; landing approach method is precision landing gear according to CAT II standards.

By 2050, Cam Ranh International Airport will have a 4E airport level and a level I military airport; capacity of 36 million passengers/year and 100,000 tons of cargo/year; aircraft types will be B747, B777, B787, A321, A350 and equivalent or lower; landing approach method will be precision landing gear according to CAT II standards.

Regarding the runway system, according to the proposal of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, in the period 2021 - 2030, Cam Ranh International Airport will maintain runway 02R/20L, size 3,048 m x 45 m, material shoulder on each side is 7.5 m wide; demolish the existing runway 02L/20R, plan a new runway 02L/20R 360 m away from runway 02R/20L, size 3,051 m x 45 m; material shoulder on each side is 7.5 m wide.

By 2050, Cam Ranh International Airport will remain at the same scale as planned in the previous phase.

Regarding the aircraft parking lot, in the period of 2021 - 2030, Cam Ranh International Airport is planned to expand the aircraft parking lot to ensure 61 aircraft parking positions including 44 code C positions and 17 code E positions; with a vision to 2050, the aircraft parking lot will be expanded to ensure 86 aircraft parking positions including 61 code C positions and 25 code E positions.

Regarding the passenger terminal, in the period 2021 - 2030, Cam Ranh International Airport is planning a passenger terminal system with a capacity of 25 million passengers/year, including building passenger terminal T1 according to demand, with a planned capacity of 21 million passengers/year (domestic 8.25 million passengers/year, international 12.75 million passengers/year), keeping terminal T2 (international) with a capacity of 4 million passengers/year.

By 2050, Cam Ranh International Airport is planned to have a passenger terminal system with a capacity of 36 million passengers/year, including expanding terminal T1 according to demand, with a planned capacity of 32 million passengers/year (domestic 12 million passengers/year, international 20 million passengers/year), keeping terminal T2 (international) with a capacity of 4 million passengers/year.

For the cargo terminal, Cam Ranh International Airport is planning a total land area for the cargo terminal of about 3.22 hectares.

During the period 2021 - 2030, Cam Ranh International Airport is planning to build a new cargo terminal located north of the aircraft parking lot, adjacent to the hangar area; the cargo terminal capacity will meet about 50,000 tons of cargo/year by 2030.

By 2050, Cam Ranh International Airport is planning to expand the cargo terminal towards Terminal T2, with a cargo terminal capacity of about 100,000 tons of cargo/year, which can be expanded to ensure long-term development.

In particular, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam proposed planning a general aviation and private aviation area at Cam Ranh International Airport to be built on a land area of about 9,610 m2, with a general aviation aircraft parking area of about 41,500 m2.

It is estimated that the land demand for the entire Cam Ranh International Airport in the 2021-2030 period and vision to 2050 is about 628.41 hectares, of which the land area managed by civil aviation is about 587.98 hectares; the land area managed by the military is about 40.43 hectares.

According to the Master Plan for the development of the national airport system for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050, approved by the Prime Minister , the operating capacity of Cam Ranh International Airport is expected to reach 25 million passengers/year by 2030 and 36 million passengers/year by 2050.

Therefore, it is necessary to review and develop the Cam Ranh International Airport Planning for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050, to ensure compliance with the orientation in the above Decision.

Previously, the Cam Ranh International Airport Planning for the period up to 2020 and orientation to 2030 was approved by the Prime Minister in Decision No. 1006/QD-TTg dated July 14, 2009 with a capacity scale of 5.5 million passengers/year by 2020 and 8 million passengers/year by 2030.

Since the planning was approved in 2009, Cam Ranh International Airport has been investing in the construction of basic construction items according to the approved planning, has been effectively exploited, contributing to the socio-economic development and national defense and security of Khanh Hoa province as well as the development of the aviation industry.

According to operational data, in 2019, before the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, the passenger volume at Cam Ranh International Airport reached 9.755 million passengers; in 2024, it reached 6.9 million passengers, the passenger volume at Cam Ranh International Airport has reached the approved capacity target.

Therefore, it is necessary to review and adjust the Cam Ranh International Airport Planning to meet the demand for air transport in the coming period.

“This is the basis for gradually investing in the construction of Cam Ranh International Airport in a reasonable and effective manner, contributing to meeting the requirements of socio-economic development, national security and defense and the growth of the aviation industry of Khanh Hoa province in particular and the South Central region in general,” said a representative of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam.
