When I was in junior high school, I really wanted to continue my studies at high school like my friends. However, due to my family's difficult economic situation, I had to drop out of school after finishing grade 9 to start working in various jobs.
At the age of 19, I volunteered to join the army. After completing 2 years of military service, I continued to work to earn a living.
It wasn’t until I was 23 that I returned to grade 10 at a district continuing education center . So most students from grade 9 to grade 12 took 3 years, but it took me a decade.
Don't be self-conscious when studying at a continuing education center
The first days of entering grade 10, I was only embarrassed about the age gap with the students in the class. Because most of my classmates were 7-8 years younger than me. However, this gap was quickly erased because what I cared most about was what I learned to serve my own future.
My only advantage at that time was that I was the oldest in the class and had completed my military service, so the homeroom teacher assigned me to be the class monitor. Perhaps, he thought that assigning me to be the class monitor would make it easier to manage the class better, and I did it. My class was often praised by the school for its good discipline.
During my years at the continuing education center, I studied silently and often had the opportunity to discuss with teachers about the problems that I was still wondering about. The teachers were always enthusiastic in helping me, especially the literature teacher. - also homeroom teacher for 3 years of school.
The homeroom teacher was worried that the oldest student in the class would have difficulty absorbing knowledge because I had dropped out of school for many years. Therefore, right from the first days of 10th grade, he asked his classmates to support the class monitor and I became an excellent student in literature and some other subjects.
There are many paths for students after completing grade 9. In addition to continuing to grade 10 at public or private schools, students can study at continuing education centers, vocational schools...
During my years at the continuing education center , my literature score was always at the top of the class. When I participated in the cluster's excellent student competition, my literature score was also the highest and I was selected to be in the provincial excellent student competition team.
After that, I passed the entrance exam to the literature department of a university and after graduating, I became a literature teacher for nearly 20 years at a high school. Looking back at my learning path - although it was long and difficult, I have never once regretted my decision.
Choose another suitable direction
In recent school years, the 10th grade entrance exam in localities often puts a lot of pressure on students due to the streaming policy. Most localities only enroll about 70% of the 10th graders in public schools. Therefore, the number of students who fail to enter public 10th grade is often very high and these students can study at private schools, vocational schools or district and provincial continuing education centers .
Basically, the 10th grade entrance exam for the 2024-2025 school year has not increased the enrollment quota for public schools compared to previous years. This year, big cities like Hanoi only enroll 61% of junior high school graduates into public 10th grade. Meanwhile, Ho Chi Minh City enrolls 71,020 students into public 10th grade - a decrease of 6,274 students compared to the 2023-2024 school year.
Therefore, approximately 30% of students who have graduated from junior high school have to choose a different path that suits their reality after knowing the results of the 10th grade entrance exam. Many students who have to study at a continuing education center often have an inferiority complex because they think that the teachers are not good, and that their classmates are often weaker than those in public schools.
This year's 10th grade entrance exam will be highly competitive, especially for students planning to apply to top schools.
In reality, most students study at continuing education centers because they fail the public 10th grade entrance exam , but that does not mean that all students give up or become indifferent to studying. There are still many students with good will to study and a desire to strive; there are still many students who, due to different circumstances, enroll here to study.
Every learning environment has talented and progressive people aiming for the future. Therefore, if students fail to pass the 10th grade of public schools, they can still boldly study at a continuing education center. This is still a good direction, suitable for reality, not a dead end in the learning process.
Which school you study at is not important because everywhere there are good teachers with many different channels to support your studies. The most important thing is that each student needs to overcome themselves, put aside negative thoughts to strive, study well to achieve their dreams for the future.
