Professor Le Van Thiem is the first Vietnamese to be appointed as a professor of mathematics at the University of Zurich, Switzerland - one of the leading universities in Europe. He and Professor Pham Tinh Quat are the first Vietnamese to receive a doctorate in France.

Born in 1918 in Duc Tho, Ha Tinh , orphaned at a young age, he went to Quy Nhon to study and in just 4 years completed the 9-year program, passing the first and full baccalaureate exams consecutively.

In 1939, he received a scholarship to France to study Mathematics at the Paris Pedagogical University, then went to Germany to do his PhD at the University of Göttingen. In 1945, he successfully defended his thesis on Riemann surfaces, becoming the first Vietnamese to receive a PhD in Mathematics.

Professor Le Van Thiem passed away in Ho Chi Minh City in 1991 at the age of 73.
