Number of securities accounts reaches 10% of population, nearly 200,000 individuals opened new accounts in the month

According to data from the Vietnam Securities Depository and Clearing Corporation, the number of new securities accounts opened by individual investors last June reached 198,622 accounts.

Domestic investors opened 198,788 new securities accounts, the highest level since August 2024. Individual investors opened mainly 198,622 new securities accounts.

The number of foreign individual accounts increased in June, similar to the previous month (186 accounts). No new foreign organizations opened accounts, while last month 12 organizations closed accounts.

As of June 30, 2025, the total number of accounts has increased to nearly 10.27 million accounts. This number is equivalent to exceeding 10% of the population. However, according to current regulations, each individual is not limited to opening accounts at different securities companies, although they can only have one account at a securities company. The above number of accounts may include non-transaction accounts opened by investors at many securities companies at the same time.

In the Stock Market Development Strategy to 2030 approved in Decision 1726/QD-TTg issued at the end of 2023, the target number of securities trading accounts of investors in the stock market is 9 million accounts by 2025 and 11 million accounts by 2030.

The 2025 target figure was met early in October 2024. However, the growth in new accounts mainly came from domestic individuals. Meanwhile, the strategy focuses on developing institutional investors, professional investors and attracting foreign investors.

Domestic individuals continued to open more accounts last month amid a positive recovery in the stock market and high liquidity.

According to statistics from the General Statistics Office ( Ministry of Finance ), the stock market capitalization reached VND 7,689.7 trillion, an increase of 7.2%. By the end of June 2025, the stock market had 718 listed stocks and fund certificates; 888 stocks registered for trading on the UPCoM floor with a total listed and registered trading value of VND 2,446 trillion, an increase of 6.52% compared to the end of 2024.

In June, the average trading value per session reached about 17,100 billion VND, 4% lower than the previous month. In which, most trading sessions recorded lower liquidity than the average of 20 sessions. Foreign investors returned to net selling after a rare month of buying. However, the net selling value of foreign investors last month was only about 520 billion VND.

Looking back at the first half of the year, trading activities in the market recorded strong fluctuations, especially in the first half of April 2025 when the United States announced a maximum reciprocal tax of 46% on Vietnam.

The VN-Index will only improve by the end of the second quarter of 2025 thanks to the gradual recovery of the economy . As of June 30, 2025, the VN-Index reached 1,376.07 points, up 8.6% compared to the end of 2024. The average trading value in the first half of the year reached VND 21,297 billion/session, still up 1.4% compared to the average in 2024.
