Shock: Coach Mourinho's favorite student suddenly died on the football field

The football world received shocking news when Mr. Jorge Costa, who had a long association with coach Mourinho, passed away suddenly in Porto.

On the evening of August 5, Porto Club announced that Mr. Jorge Costa, the famous captain of the team under coach Mourinho, had passed away at the age of 53. Mr. Costa is currently the team's director.

According to the official announcement, Mr. Costa suddenly collapsed due to a cardiac arrest at the Olival training center of FC Porto. Although the medical team used a defibrillator at the scene and quickly transferred him to the nearby São Joao Hospital, Mr. Costa still could not be saved.

Not long before, Mr. Costa had complained of fatigue due to the intense heat. In 2022, he suffered a stroke but recovered.

Jorge Paulo Costa Almeida was born on October 14, 1971 in Porto. He was a defensive icon and the soul of FC Porto's defense for more than a decade.

He officially joined Porto from 1992 to 2005, playing 383 matches for the team and winning a total of 24 major titles, including 8 Primeira Liga national championships, 5 national cups, 8 super cups, 1 UEFA Cup. The peak of which was the 2004 Champions League title and the Intercontinental Cup title.

He won 50 caps for Portugal and was part of the 1991 U20 World Cup-winning team. With his aggressive playing style, the centre-back was nicknamed “Bicho” (The Beast) or “Tanque” (Tank) by his friends and Porto fans.

Mr. Costa has a particularly close relationship with coach Jose Mourinho. When coach Mourinho took over Porto in early 2002, he chose Costa to be the captain.

Under the leadership of coach Mourinho, Costa became a defensive pillar, a key factor helping Porto win a series of major titles in the following years.

After retiring in 2006, Jorge Costa became a coach and has led a series of teams in Portugal, Romania, Qatar, India...

In 2024, he returned to Porto as director of football. In this position, Mr. Costa plays an important role in the transfer policy and development direction of the team.

His sudden passing has shocked the international football community. FC Porto in an official statement called Costa an “irreplaceable figure” in the club’s history, and affirmed that his legacy will live forever in the memories of fans.
