The Ministry of Education and Training has just announced information on postgraduate training (master's and doctoral degrees) in the 2024-2025 school year.
Autonomous training institutions open 75 master's programs and 27 doctoral programs.
In 2024, universities autonomously opened 75 master's degree training majors, accounting for 66.3%; 27 doctoral degree training majors, accounting for 62.79% of the opening of training majors at all levels in the past year.
According to the ministry, the 2025 master's and doctoral enrollment will continue to be stable as in previous years. Higher education institutions are autonomous in organizing one or more enrollment periods per year, depending on the plan and conditions to ensure training quality.
Last school year, the total target for doctoral training was 7,068 but only 4,077 graduate students were recruited (57.6%); 68,652 targets for master's training, but only 43,785 students were recruited (63.7%).

Postgraduate training is still biased towards a few "trendy" fields.
Regarding the scale of postgraduate training in the 2024-2025 academic year, it shows that there is currently a clear focus on certain fields, with emphasis on the economic, management, service and technical sectors.
At the master's level, the training scale is up to more than 109,000 students, nearly 9 times higher than that of the doctorate (12,000 postgraduates). Of which, the Business - Management - Law (Group III) and Humanities - Society - Services (VII) sectors account for more than half of the total number of students.
At the doctoral level, the distribution is relatively more balanced: three majors including Business - Law (III), Engineering - Technology - Agriculture and Forestry (V) and Social Sciences - Humanities (VII) account for more than 70% of the total scale. This shows that the orientation of in-depth research is not only focused on the field of economics - management but also expanded to engineering and applied sciences.
However, majors such as Arts (II) and Basic Sciences (IV) have very small proportions, raising questions about the imbalance in the strategy for developing high-quality human resources.
According to experts, over-emphasizing certain "trendy" fields in postgraduate training can lead to a shortage of experts in fundamental fields, which have long-term significance for the development of national science and culture.
To ensure sustainable development, education policies need to be more balanced, while encouraging research in fields of fundamental and long-term value.
