Sudan 'stuck in worst nightmare' in 18 months

The United Nations (UN) warned on November 12 that the civil war in Sudan is continuing to cause "serious violence and suffering" for millions of civilians in this Northeast African country.

According to the UN, while clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the country have taken a dangerous turn, the latest wave of attacks in Al-Gazira state in eastern Sudan is "the most extreme violence in the past 18 months".

Speaking at the UN Security Council meeting on November 12, Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemarie DiCarlo stressed that Sudan is "trapped in a nightmare" due to recent brutal acts that have caused great casualties among civilians.

In addition, Ms. DiCarlo also condemned the continuous attacks by the RSF and SAF forces on densely populated areas, and called on the opposing sides in Sudan to cease fire to protect civilians.

Food insecurity is widespread in the war-torn country, according to Ramesh Rajasingham, director of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

In the Darfur and Khartoum regions, thousands have died and malnutrition rates are rising, especially among children.

Therefore, Mr. Rajasingham called for promoting a "humanitarian pause" agreement to bring aid to conflict areas, while urging the international community to provide flexible financial support for relief operations and promote a ceasefire agreement.

However, despite international efforts to promote peace talks, both the RSF and SAF continue to escalate many military operations.

Since the conflict in Sudan broke out in April 2023, at least 20,000 people have been killed and more than 33,000 injured. In addition, the conflict has also caused the world's worst displacement crisis. More than 11 million people have been forced to leave their homes and 3 million have fled to neighboring countries.
