Awarding certificates of merit to students who won the International Youth Science Olympiad

(Dan Tri) - This morning (October 13), the Hanoi Department of Education and Training welcomed the delegation of students participating in the International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) back.

At the ceremony, the Director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training awarded certificates of merit to 6 students who won medals and 5 officers and teachers who participated in training and coaching students in the recent exam.

The five students who won silver medals include: Le Tung Lam, class 10 Physics 2 and Le Gia Hong Minh, class 10 Physics 1, Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted; Vuong Ha Chi and Vu Nhat Long, class 10G0, Newton Secondary and High School; Nguyen Ngoc Que Chi, class 10 Chemistry 2, Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted.

The student who won the bronze medal was Nguyen Thanh Nhan, class 10 Chemistry 1, Nguyen Hue High School for the Gifted.

Mr. Pham Quoc Toan, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, Head of the delegation, said that despite the difficult questions, the students tried their best and achieved impressive results with 5 silver medals and 1 bronze medal.

The exam lasts for 10 days, in which candidates must take a natural science test in 3 subjects: physics, chemistry, and biology. Each subject has 3 tests including: objective test; theory test; and practical test.

The exam questions, developed by the IJSO World Academic Committee, are open and require candidates to fully develop their individual and teamwork abilities, while the exam questions are highly practical.

At the welcoming ceremony, Mr. Tran The Cuong, Director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, said that the medals that the students achieved were rewards for their outstanding efforts and demonstrated their responsibility to continue to reach further.

"I believe that from today's successes, you will go further on the path of research and knowledge conquest, becoming outstanding individuals, actively contributing to the development of the country.

This is an opportunity for us to look back and acknowledge efforts in innovation, improving the quality of education, and creating a favorable environment for students to maximize their talents and intelligence," said the Director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training.

During the competition, the students participated in cultural exchange programs with the host country and international delegations.

In particular, the teachers and students of the delegation also paid a courtesy visit and visited the Vietnamese Embassy in Romania. They were welcomed, encouraged and congratulated on their achievements by Mr. Do Duc Thanh, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Vietnam in Romania.

Le Tung Lam, a 10th grade student at Hanoi Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, representing the students in the team, shared that the questions in the test were very interesting and challenging.

This exam requires students to have a solid knowledge base, as well as time management skills, organization, and work arrangement, and need to have the practical mindset of a real scientist.

The International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) is a prestigious science competition, a knowledge competition playground, held annually for students under 15 years old to encourage students to approach practical science in the world early, challenge and encourage the nurturing of scientific talents.

In 2024, the exam will be held in Romania, with the participation of 56 countries. This is the 14th year that the Hanoi Department of Education and Training has been authorized by the Ministry of Education and Training and assigned by the Hanoi People's Committee to organize the selection and establishment of a team representing Vietnam to participate in the IJSO Exam.

The competition is administered by an International Committee with members from the scientific field, elected from organizations around the world.

The first competition was held in 2004 in Jakarta, Indonesia. Since then, the competition has been held annually in different countries with the aim of creating a knowledge competition, encouraging students to have early access to practical scientific knowledge in the world; challenging and encouraging the nurturing of scientific talents.
