World No. 1 women's doubles player was called 'uneducated' by her opponent

World No. 1 women's doubles player Taylor Townsend (29 years old, USA) had a heated argument with Jelena Ostapenko (28 years old, Latvia) in the second round of the 2025 US Open. Townsend said she was insulted by her opponent for being uneducated.

On the morning of August 28 (Vietnam time), American tennis player Townsend faced the 2017 French Open champion - Ostapenko in the second round of the 2025 US Open. Townsend was soon led 5-3 by the Latvian tennis player in the first set.

The 29-year-old didn't take long to regain her composure and won 9 consecutive games. Her determination helped Townsend continuously pressure her opponent and win the right to enter the 3rd round of the US Open with the final score of 7-5, 6-1.

As soon as the match ended, the world number 1 female doubles player went to shake hands with her opponent, a formal end-of-match greeting. However, fans were surprised by the heated argument between the two athletes.

After the match, Ostapenko shared on Instagram that she was unhappy with Townsend's behavior before and during the match. The Latvian tennis player said that Townsend was disrespectful by letting the ball touch the net at a crucial moment without apologizing.

“There are some rules in tennis that most players follow, and this is the first time I have encountered this on tour. If she plays at home, it does not mean she can behave and do whatever she wants,” Ostapenko said after the match.

For her part, Townsend said Ostapenko insulted her when the two went to shake hands after the match. The 29-year-old said she was told she had no class or education and that things would be different if she played outside the United States.

Despite this, Townsend praised Ostapenko for her good start, but also said she "locked in" her opponent to turn the game around. In the press conference afterward, the American added that she had no problems with Ostapenko beforehand.

The 2017 French Open champion has previously angered opponents. At Wimbledon 2021, Ajla Tomljanovic accused the Latvian of faking pain when she requested a medical break.
