Russian Kalibr missiles attack Ukrainian pilot training center

The Russian Defense Ministry announced on June 23 that the Russian military had carried out a group attack with high-precision long-range weapons. The location of the attack was a pilot and engineer training center of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

“The objectives of the strike were achieved,” the Russian Defense Ministry said at its daily briefing. “All assigned targets were destroyed.”

Ukraine's capital Kiev, its surrounding area and several other places across the country were put on air raid alert for about an hour early in the morning. A series of explosions were then heard in and near several places in the city.

Mykola Oleshchuk, commander of the Ukrainian Air Force, said on Telegram that air defenses in the Kiev region shot down two of three Kalibr cruise missiles launched by the Russian military. However, losses were still reported in the capital.

A video shared on social media shows what appears to be several Russian Kalibr cruise missiles flying at very low altitude towards Kiev.

Kalibr is a Russian multi-purpose cruise missile complex developed by the Novator design bureau. This type of missile can carry many different warheads, allowing it to destroy many types of targets in the air, on land and at sea. Kalibr is considered one of Russia's main weapons.

The missile is 6.2 - 8.9m long (depending on the variant), with a breakthrough range of 1,500km to 2,500km. The missile can carry a warhead with explosives of about 400 - 500kg at Mach 3 speed.

The Kalibr cruise missile is equipped with a GLONASS satellite navigation system and inertial guidance, along with an ARGS-14E radar seeker with a range of 20km. The missile's active radar warhead allows the missile to accurately attack its target even if GPS is jammed.

The group attack could be Russia's response to attacks that Ukraine carried out against Russia's Belgorod region, the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic, and damaged facilities at the Russian-run Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant a day earlier.

Notably, the Russian military has resumed group attacks on military infrastructure and command posts in Ukraine since March in response to the Kiev government's continued attacks on civilians and infrastructure in Russia.
