During the New Year week in Asia, Thailand welcomed nearly 880,000 visitors, with revenue 1.2 times higher than expected.

Thailand has attracted a large number of international visitors during the Lunar New Year, said Minister of Tourism and Sports Sudawan Wangsuphakitkoson on February 13. During the 7 days from February 5 to 11, nearly 880,000 visitors visited, an increase of more than 13% compared to the previous week. On average, nearly 125,000 visitors entered the country each day during the Lunar New Year. Previously, the government expected to welcome nearly 1 million international visitors during the New Year (February 8-16).

The main visitors come from Southeast Asia and East Asia such as mainland China, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea, India and Russia.

According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), tourism revenue during Tet is estimated to reach more than 950 million USD, 1.2 times higher than the initial estimate and up 36% over the same period last year.

The head of Thailand's Ministry of Culture and Tourism said international visitors are expected to continue arriving in February. Visa exemptions for visitors from China, India, Taiwan, Kazakhstan, and increased flight frequency are greatly supporting the Thai tourism industry. The country is also waiting for a boom in visitors during Songkran. The Thai government said on February 13 that Songkran 2024 will last for five days, from April 12 to 16, to boost spending by international and domestic tourists. Previously, officials had considered extending Songkran to a month.
