Thailand: Water levels in reservoirs at record lows

According to the National Water and Climate Data Center (NWCDC), water levels in Thailand's major reservoirs are at alarmingly low levels, with only 19% usable for domestic use, agriculture and ecosystem protection.

The NWCDC report said the situation in western Thailand is most worrying, as only 13% of the water in reservoirs is currently usable, the lowest compared to 34% in the south and 30% in the east.

The Chao Phraya River basin needs 12 billion cubic meters of water during the dry season and early rainy season, but the total water volume in Thailand's four main reservoirs, Bhumibol, Sirikit, Pasak Jolasid and Kwae Noi Bamrung Dan, can only supply 4.551 billion cubic meters of water, meaning there is a shortage of 7.449 billion cubic meters of water.
