Mr. Huynh Ky Tam contributed 1,500m2 of land to build a road and dike around Ong Le canal.

1. Born and raised in the borderland, having participated in the fight to protect the southwestern border, more than anyone else, veteran Huynh Ky Tam (residing in Binh Hiep commune) understands the value of peace .

Sipping tea on the shady porch, the veteran looked into the distance: “The value of life today is immeasurable. My comrades have remained on the battlefield, including those who came from the North to the South to fight. Now, in the martyrs’ cemetery, there are still graves whose identities have not been found. To have today, to have enough food and warm clothes like this is something my comrades and I have always dreamed of.”

Having gone through difficult days during wartime, when returning to peacetime life, Mr. Tam devoted himself to joining hands to build his homeland, from being an exemplary person in donating land, contributing funds for projects to participating in advocacy and propaganda work.

The green rice fields and the fruit-bearing orchards today are the result of months of hard work, diligence and dedication to the common good of Mr. Tam as well as all the people where he lives.

Mr. Huynh Ky Tam (left cover) met and talked with officials of Binh Hiep commune. He is like a "bridge" between the government and the people.

Pointing to the road and the dike of Ong Le canal, Mr. Tam said: “In the past, this road could only be walked on. To bring fertilizer to the fields, you had to carry small bags on your shoulders. But now, the road is also a dike, protecting the rice and facilitating traffic and transportation. 4-5 ton trucks can go to the fields. Just that much is enough to see how much people's lives have improved. My 2 hectares of rice are located inside the dike, and I joined a cooperative group and signed a consumption contract with a business, so production and consumption are both easy and convenient. Farmers together produce the same rice variety, fertilize and spray pesticides all by machine, so farmers no longer have to work as hard as before.”

To make the road and dike take shape and be effective, Mr. Tam and the people unanimously donated land to build the road. As the head of the Go Dua Hamlet War Veterans Association and trusted in the mobilization team, Mr. Tam took the lead by example, donating more than 1,500 square meters of his family's land to build the road and dike.

Looking at Mr. Tam, and seeing the effectiveness of previous projects in the locality, the people encouraged each other to donate land. So the project was completed as planned! "The way the government works makes people believe, so now when it comes to building roads, dykes or pumping stations, people all support it" - Mr. Tam smiled, his smile sparkling with joy.

2. If the story of veteran Huynh Ky Tam shows the spirit of Uncle Ho's soldiers in peacetime, in another corner of the border area, Mr. Nguyen Chi Trai (residing in Hamlet 3, Tuyen Binh Commune) represents the image of a farmer and party member who constantly rises from hardship.

The South bank of Canal 28 is one of the rural roads and bridges that Mr. Nguyen Chi Trai participated in mobilizing people to donate land and contribute funds.

Coming to Tuyen Binh to start a business in 1988, Mr. Trai started with more than 1 hectare of fallow land. Without machinery, he and his wife had to use human power to improve the land. In 1989, he decided to buy an old tractor, despite having to borrow money at high interest rates to buy oil and repair the machine. "At that time, renting a tractor was very expensive, so I thought, I had to buy my own machine to be in charge of my farming" - Mr. Trai recalled.

The old tractor quickly became a "companion", not only serving his family but also helping other households in farming... Thanks to that, production was also more favorable, and his family's economy gradually stabilized.

From 1 hectare of land when he first started his career, Mr. Trai now owns 30 hectares of rice fields in Tuyen Binh. But what makes the people of Hamlet 3 remember Mr. Trai is not only his diligence and creativity but also his exemplary character as a party member.

In 2008, Mr. Trai joined the Party, then participated in hamlet work, taking on the role of Party Cell Secretary and Hamlet Chief for many years. He was a pioneer in movements, especially mobilizing people to donate land to open roads, contribute to building rural traffic bridges,...

In the past, when Mr. Trai first started his career in this area, in front of his house was a wide canal, the road to the hamlet was just a small dirt road. When the road construction policy was proposed, Mr. Trai, as the Party Cell Secretary, established a team to go to each house to persuade people to donate land for road construction. Thanks to that, a wide concrete road was formed, cars could reach the alley of the house.

“To build this road, each household living along the road had to move their fences back 15 meters. Thanks to the people’s solidarity, we have the road as it is now,” Mr. Trai shared.

People like Mr. Trai or Mr. Tam are prestigious people in the locality. With their efforts and practical and close work, people like Mr. Tam and Mr. Trai are a solid “bridge” between the people and the local government./.
