New York Mayor Eric Adams turned on the light as a choir sang "Joy to the World ." This year's tree is a Norway spruce, a pine tree that is 80 to 85 years old and 84 feet tall, weighs 12 tons, and was transported from the town of Vestal in southern New York.

Erik Pauze, Rockefeller Center's chief gardener, has been in charge of finding the tree that will light up every Christmas for 30 years. Pauze's criteria for choosing a tree include a Norway spruce, at least 70 feet tall, with a 40- to 45-foot spread. The tree must be large and sturdy enough to handle the heavy electrical wiring and light bulbs. It must have a beautiful shape, green leaves, and a full canopy. The family that donated this year's tree to light up Rockefeller Center is Joe Fryer.
