While many places are struggling to ban students from using cell phones, teachers and students at Ngo Quyen High School on the remote island of Phu Quy have been unanimous for many years.

Using phone at school will deduct KPI

Sharing with Tuoi Tre Online , Mr. Le Quang Trong - Vice Principal of Ngo Quyen High School - said that the teachers and the school board have been thinking about students saying no to phones at school for about 5 years.

At that time, the school board saw that the students spent too much time using their phones, distracting them during class. During recess, they no longer exercised or played as before, but kept their eyes glued to their phones. This way, the students' academic performance would decline, and they could get deeply involved in negative activities on social media platforms.

Since the 2021-2022 school year, the school has not banned it but only encouraged and restricted students from bringing phones to school. This form is also included in the competition regulations, if any student is found using a phone without the teacher's permission, points will be deducted. However, there are still some students who secretly use it, even during class.

By the beginning of the 2024 school year, the school was more drastic, applying very high deductions in KPI, so students were wary and no longer brought their phones to school.

To change a habit, especially for students in their growing years, doing so faces many difficulties and conflicting opinions.

"Before making the above decision, we conducted a public opinion survey. Fortunately, most parents on the island agreed with this and strongly supported it. Although some students were shocked when they heard the news, they had no choice but to follow the rules," said Mr. Nguyen Hai Tho, the school's principal.

Teacher and students together will solve all obstacles.

According to Mr. Tho, another lucky thing is that the students on the island learn to be independent from an early age. From primary and secondary school, they go to school by themselves, without needing their parents to pick them up.

Moreover, on a peaceful island, everyone knows each other so there is no need to worry about students getting lost or other unexpected events happening. Parents can easily monitor their children, without necessarily having to equip them with cell phones.

"But the key is still the people who do it. If teachers, parents, and students are of one mind, any difficulty can be solved," Mr. Tho analyzed.

Some lessons require interaction from phones, what should we do? According to teachers, to overcome some special situations, the school has come up with many backup solutions.

There are some lessons that have content on how to use/interact via phone (no more than 5 lessons per school year), the subject teacher is the person responsible to the principal.

If you use a phone, clearly state the time and what you are using it for. If you are found using it outside of class, it is considered a violation of the rules.

In addition, each class will have two students in the media committee. One of these two students will be allowed to bring a phone to school and will only use it with the teacher's permission.

Explaining this situation, Mr. Le Quang Trong said that it would not interrupt the communication between the class and the school. Students can also hear urgent messages from teachers in some situations.

"The school carefully analyzes all such actions with parents from the beginning of the school year, and even surveys the students' opinions from time to time. If students have any requests, the school will arrange a phone protection cabinet in each room. This cabinet is closed at the beginning of class and can only be opened when educational activities at school end," Mr. Trong shared.

The teachers were excited to add that the success was that after surveying the 12th grade students themselves, most of them highly appreciated the effectiveness of the above solution.

"The result was that even the students did not expect it to be so good after a period of abstaining from their phones. We conducted a survey of the entire grade 12 class, and everyone raised their hands in agreement that we should continue this policy to focus more on studying," Mr. Tho said excitedly.
