Harvesting many important agreements, affirming the relationship at a "very high level"

On August 20, India and Japan held the third 2+2 Foreign and Defense Ministers' Meeting in the capital New Delhi.

Japan's Defence Minister Kihara Minoru and Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa along with their Indian counterparts Rajnath Singh and S. Jaishankar respectively participated in the Conference.

At the meeting, the two sides reached many important agreements on security and defense cooperation, such as agreeing to build a new framework for security cooperation, in line with the desire to expand the overall strategic relationship.

The officials also reaffirmed their determination to cooperate for peace and prosperity in a free and open Indo- Pacific region.

The Hindustan Times quoted Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar as saying that the two sides discussed new directions in technology, research and industrial cooperation.

Stressing the importance of trust-based cooperation in emerging technology, including defence, India urged Japan to remove legal barriers in sharing critical technology.

The two countries agreed to strengthen cooperation in capacity building, including addressing challenges in cyberspace. New Delhi and Tokyo also strongly condemned terrorism and violent extremism in all its forms.

The India-Japan 2+2 Foreign and Defence Ministerial Meeting aims to further deepen bilateral security and defence cooperation, giving depth to the special strategic and global partnership between the two countries. India has adopted this format of dialogue with only a few countries, including the US, Australia and Russia.

A day before the Summit, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Japanese ministers and reviewed the progress in defense and security relations between the two countries.

Mr. Modi reaffirmed the role of the India-Japan partnership in promoting peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond.

"India-Japan relations are at a very high level. Bringing together the Foreign and Defence Ministers of the two countries in one forum will give a strong boost to all aspects of the bilateral relationship," said Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesman Randhir Jaiswal.
