Intelligence agency chief becomes new Secretary of State

Hakan Fidan was one of the most talked about names before Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's new cabinet was announced on June 3.

On June 3, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan appointed a new cabinet for the country's government , including new figures leading key positions.

Accordingly, Mr. Hakan Fidan - head of the National Intelligence Organization (MIT) since 2010 was appointed as Foreign Minister, replacing Mr. Mevlut Cavusoglu - one of Turkey's veteran diplomats .

As one of President Erdogan's closest aides, Hakan Fidan, 55, is known for his contributions to Turkey's national security and involvement in various diplomatic and intelligence operations. He served as an adviser to Erdogan when the leader was Prime Minister .

According to President Erdogan's appointment decision, Türkiye has a new Vice President, economic manager Cevdet Yilmaz, 56 years old, who has held the positions of Minister of Development, Deputy Head of the Justice and Development Party (APK) in charge of economics and Deputy Prime Minister in charge of economics.

Mr. Mehmet Simsek - who served as Minister of Finance and Deputy Prime Minister from 2009 to 2018 - was appointed as Minister of Treasury and Finance.

Defense Minister Hulusi Akar will be replaced by Yasar Guler, 69, who served in the armed forces for 49 years and has been chief of the Turkish military's general staff since 2018.

Former Turkish Ambassador to Algeria Mahinur Özdemir has been appointed as the country's new Minister of Social and Family Policy, replacing Derya Yanık.

Ali Yerlikaya, who has served as Istanbul Governor since 2018, replaced his predecessor, Suleyman Soylu, as Interior Minister.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan appointed a new cabinet after being sworn in before the Parliament, officially starting a new five-year presidential term. He is the longest-serving leader in Türkiye.
