Speaking on television, Prime Minister Sanchez said he had informed King Felipe VI of his decision to dissolve parliament and call for early general elections on July 23.

He stressed that in his role as head of government and president of the PSOE party, and based on the results of the local elections, he considered it necessary to respond to the people's aspirations.

Thus, the general election will take place after Spain takes over the rotating presidency of the European Union (EU) on July 1.

In local elections on May 28, considered a test for the general election scheduled to take place later this year, Prime Minister Sanchez's PSOE and its ally Podemos lost to their rivals, the conservative opposition People's Party (PP) and the far-right Vox party.
