Promoting influence in the Indo-Pacific, South Korea appoints special envoy

The South Korean Foreign Ministry has appointed Ambassador Chung Kee-yong as the country's special envoy for Indo- Pacific affairs.

This is a new position, part of a reform plan to expand diplomacy and respond to regional challenges.

Yonhap quoted the ministry's announcement as saying that Mr. Chung Kee-yong will be responsible for promoting South Korea's Indo- Pacific strategy and working with important partner countries in and outside the region to strengthen cooperation on related issues.

Mr. Chung Kee-yong is a career diplomat, former Korean Ambassador to Morocco, Director General for Climate, Environment and Science, and Advisor at the Korean Embassy in Washington (USA).

With extensive experience in many fields, Mr. Chung is considered the right person for the position of promoting Korea's participation in implementing the Indo-Pacific Strategy, which was announced by the government of President Yoon Suk Yeol in late 2022.

South Korea's Indo-Pacific Strategy focuses on promoting freedom, peace and prosperity through establishing a rules-based order based on the principles of inclusiveness, trust and reciprocity.

Key areas of initiative include security cooperation in economics, science and technology, climate change cooperation and development cooperation between Korea and countries in the region.
