Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein of California has died at the age of 90, ending more than half a decade of political career.
"Senator Feinstein passed away last night at her home in Washington, DC. This is a great loss for many people," James Sauls, chief of staff to Senator Dianne Feinstein, announced on September 29.
Ms. Feinstein became mayor of San Francisco after the assassination of her predecessor, George Moscone, and Supervisor Harvey Milk in 1978. She entered the US Senate after winning a special election in 1992, was re-elected five times, and became the longest-serving female senator.
Ms Feinstein's departure is not expected to change the balance of power in the US Senate. The California governor will appoint a temporary Democratic replacement to fill the vacant Senate seat.

An icon in the Senate and the promoter of hundreds of bills, Ms. Feinstein became the first woman to chair the US Senate Intelligence Committee in January 2009. One of the notable laws introduced by Ms. Feinstein was the ban on assault rifles that took effect in 1994 and expired 10 years later.
In 2014, Ms. Feinstein released a 6,700-page report on the CIA's secret detention and interrogation of suspects overseas after the September 11, 2001, attacks.
"The CIA's actions are a stain on our values and our history," Ms. Feinstein said when releasing a report on the controversial interrogation methods the CIA used on at least 119 people.
Feinstein's health problems slowed her career in the final months of her life. In February, she announced she would not seek re-election in 2024 and would not serve in the US Senate for three months after suffering from a number of illnesses.
Ms Feinstein once declared that "we can still pass bills to improve lives, even in a divided Congress ". "Each of us was sent here to solve problems", she emphasized.
