Import and export of goods at Chan May port |
Dramatic change
From the center of Hue city , passing Phuoc Tuong tunnel in less than an hour's drive, Chan May - Lang Co appears like a soft silk strip. People have long compared Chan May - Lang Co to a picturesque landscape painting that few places have.
Chan May - Lang Co has an area of over 27,000 hectares, is one of the 8 key national coastal economic zones, identified as the growth engine of Hue City and the Central region. Since 2006, the appearance of Chan May - Lang Co has changed every day. The vast white sand beaches now have luxury resorts and bustling clean industrial factories. Chan May deep-water port - one of the few ports to receive large-tonnage international ships is currently investing in additional berths 4 and 5 to complete the goal of having 8 berths by 2030.
Mr. Tran Dinh Quoc, supervising engineer of Vsico Maritime Joint Stock Company - the unit investing in the construction of Terminal 4, Chan May Port, shared: "We chose Chan May - Lang Co to invest because of its ideal location. Less than 50km from the center of Hue City and Da Nang as well as Phu Bai International Airport; goods from all over the place passing through Chan May Port have many advantages when exported abroad."

To date, Chan May - Lang Co Economic Zone (EZ) has attracted 63 projects, with a total registered investment capital of VND105,000 billion, including 18 FDI projects, with a registered capital of USD2,560 million, equivalent to VND57,260 billion. Of which, the Laguna Lang Co resort complex project of Banyan Tree Group (Singapore) has positioned itself as an international-class tourism brand and created stable jobs for thousands of local workers.
Ms. Le Thi Hong, a customer service staff at Laguna Lang Co, shared that 4 years ago, she worked seasonally in Da Nang, but now she has a job near home, a stable income, and the opportunity to improve her foreign language skills, so she is very happy. There are many cases like Ms. Hong in Chan May - Lang Co Economic Zone. From a poor coastal area, Chan May - Lang Co is now named on the map of dynamic investment destinations in the Central region.
Recently, Hue City signed a Memorandum of Understanding on strategic cooperation with Phuong Trang Group (FUTA Group) and Kim Long Motor Hue Joint Stock Company, aiming to promote green industrial projects, smart urban areas and logistics in Chan May - Lang Co. This event is expected to contribute to realizing the goal of sustainable development, elevating this economic zone in the coming years.

Synchronous planning
Development often comes with many challenges. Rapid development without sustainability is a lesson that many other coastal localities have encountered. Therefore, Chan May - Lang Co needs a specific development orientation, with the goal of not trading the environment for mere growth. This is also the goal of the city set out in the general development orientation.
In the Hoi Mit and Hoi Dua areas (Lang Co town, Phu Loc district in the past), many people have gradually changed their occupations from raising livestock and gardening to community tourism. However, due to the lack of specific planning and lack of synchronous infrastructure, this model is still fragmented. "Many families want to invest in homestays but are not clear about the regulations. They are afraid that when they finish, they will be stuck in planning and it will be a waste to abandon them" - Mr. Le Ty, a resident of the Hoi Mit residential group (old) worried.
In addition, the connecting infrastructure in the region also needs to be improved to attract investment. Chan May - Lang Co has a lot of potential but is still not synchronized, lacking social housing, culture, services, logistics infrastructure and accompanying services. Recently, the locality has issued many good policies to attract investors but the results are still not as expected.
More and more infrastructure for production of goods is being built in Chan May - Lang Co. |
At seminars related to the development planning of Chan May - Lang Co Economic Zone, some experts said that uncontrolled development could erode the special natural values of the region. Chairman of the Vietnam Urban Planning and Development Association Tran Ngoc Chinh, when giving comments on the Thua Thien Hue Urban Master Plan (now Hue City) to 2045, with a vision to 2065, commented: “Chan May - Lang Co plays an important role not only in developing the local economy but also in the entire Central region. The greatest value here is the intersection between nature and people, which is a long-term attraction. Therefore, appropriate development strategies are needed.”
Recently, Hue City announced the Decision to adjust the Master Plan for the construction of Chan May - Lang Co Economic Zone until 2045, in addition to the goal of becoming a comprehensive, multi-sector, modern, environmentally friendly economic zone, with priority given to the construction of new urban areas, social housing...
To achieve the above goal, Chan May - Lang Co needs to have a comprehensive strategy, concretizing the synchronization between planning, investment and community. It is necessary to be selective when inviting investors and businesses in a green direction; prioritize more connecting traffic infrastructure, especially the central axis of the economic zone; port infrastructure that represents an inter-regional logistics center and is not only a place to anchor ships but must also pay attention to environmental issues when vehicles enter and exit to import and export goods. In addition, the development process in Chan May - Lang Co must have the role of the local community. No one understands the sea better than the people who live on the sea. They need to be trained, change their livelihoods, have a voice in policy decisions and benefit directly from investment projects...
