The Information reported on July 6 that TikTok is developing a new version of the app for users in the US, ahead of plans to sell the app to a group of investors.
The move comes as US President Donald Trump said on July 5 that he would begin negotiations with China on July 8 or 9 about a possible deal involving TikTok. Mr. Trump said the US was close to an agreement on the sale of the short video app.
TikTok had planned to launch the new app on US app stores on September 5. Last month, Mr. Trump extended the deadline until September 17 for ByteDance, its Chinese-based parent company, to divest from TikTok’s US assets.
The Information also said TikTok users will have to download a new app to continue using the service, though the current version will still work until March next year - a date that is subject to change.
A deal was struck earlier this year to spin off TikTok's US operations into a new US-based company, owned and operated largely by US investors.
However, the plan was suspended after Beijing signaled it would not approve it amid Mr Trump's announcement of high tariffs on Chinese goods. President Trump said the US would likely have to wait for China to approve the deal.
