Panoramic view of two bridges damaged after storm No. 3 in Yen Bai under repair

Due to the impact of storm No. 3 (Yagi), the Van Phu and Yen Bai bridges were severely damaged. After more than 1.5 months of construction, many items are nearly completed, and it is expected that Van Phu bridge will be repaired on December 29. Yen Bai bridge is still awaiting inspection and has not yet been put back into operation.

According to Giao thong Newspaper reporters on December 17, Van Phu bridge is being repaired. At the construction site, workers and dozens of machines and materials are focused on completing the project on schedule.

Ms. Dao Thi Hoa (29 years old, Yen Ninh, Yen Bai city) said that because the bridge is located on the main road leading from Yen Bai city to the IC 12 intersection of Noi Bai - Lao Cai highway, the number of vehicles passing through here is very high, leading to some sections of the bridge surface deteriorating.

Van Phu Bridge, Yen Bai City started construction in 2002 and completed in 2004. The bridge is 474.96m long, 10m wide, with a vehicle load capacity of H30-XB80, and is a permanent bridge made of reinforced concrete and prestressed reinforced concrete with a total investment of 50 billion VND.

According to Mr. Tran Duc Quang, representative of the Van Phu Bridge repair construction unit: "The unit is focusing on arranging 3 shifts of workers to ensure completion on schedule as committed to the Yen Bai Department of Transport. The bridge is expected to be completed before December 28, then it will be handed over to the road construction unit. Thus, by December 29, the bridge repair will be completed and traffic will be open and normal."

The construction unit representative added that the unfinished items include 2 transitional slabs at both ends, 2 top walls of the wing walls at both ends of the bridge abutments and the bridge deck of span L1, and jacking up the beams to replace the bearings of span 1 and span 9.

After opening Van Phu bridge, the unit will continue to construct a number of other related items such as signs, road markings, reinforcing fiber for box girders, installing inspection ladder systems and repairing a number of cross beam and pillar positions, handing over to complete the items before January 25, 2025.

Previously, Yen Bai Department of Transport issued Official Dispatch No. 1955 announcing the traffic diversion plan for Van Phu bridge on Au Co road.

Expected to hand over all items before January 25, 2025.

Also due to the influence of storm circulation No. 3 ( Yagi ), the strong water flow swept away a lot of trash, trees... causing 2 inspection vehicles of Yen Bai bridge to drift away. When the water level of Thao river rose near the steel truss system (at about 8:04 am on September 10), a sand suction ship drifting freely from the upstream of Thao river crashed into the pillars and girders of Yen Bai bridge, affecting the quality and safety of the project and the structure and connection system of the project.

Speaking to reporters, a representative of the Yen Bai Department of Transport confirmed that up to this point, Yen Bai bridge has not yet been put back into operation, and all vehicles are not allowed to circulate.

Currently, the Yen Bai Department of Transport is coordinating with the specialized department of the Vietnam Road Administration to approve the Economic - Technical Report on the investment in the construction of the Yen Bai Bridge Unscheduled Inspection Project. After the approval decision is made, the Department of Transport will direct the bridge inspection unit to urgently carry out the inspection, report on the safety assessment, the need for repairs and propose to allow vehicles to pass through the bridge.
