Teachers and students in Huong Phung commune, Quang Tri province are having to study in poor conditions, in makeshift schools.

On September 5, the People's Committee of Quang Tri province announced that it had just submitted a report proposing plans and investment portfolio to build a school system for 15 border communes.

According to the plan, Quang Tri province will build 10 new inter-level general schools and renovate and upgrade 6 existing ethnic boarding schools.

Currently, Quang Tri has 16 border communes with 57 general schools, including 17 semi-boarding ethnic minority schools and one secondary boarding school. Many schools still lack subject classrooms, auxiliary blocks, and sports areas; some places have to use temporary rooms, borrowed rooms, or rooms that are degraded, affecting the quality of teaching and learning.

The province’s goal is for each border commune to have at least one standard primary and secondary school, meeting the learning needs of students in disadvantaged areas. The new schools will be invested in synchronously, creating a learning and living environment for more than 21,000 students, while improving working conditions for long-term teachers.

The total investment capital requirement is estimated at about VND 3,338 billion, of which 90% comes from the central budget, the rest comes from the local budget and other legally mobilized sources.

This year, Quang Tri province plans to start construction of Huong Phung Primary and Secondary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities with a total capital of 335 billion VND (phase one about 250 billion).

Upon completion, the school will receive about 2,100 students from four existing educational facilities, becoming a key educational center in the border area.
