The People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City has just issued an official dispatch assigning relevant units to study and propose investment in a sea route connecting Can Gio and Ba Ria - Vung Tau . The area where the bridge is expected to be built is near the Can Gio - Vung Tau ferry terminal, in Vung Tau ward, Ho Chi Minh City.

This area is located along Tran Phu Street, where there are densely populated residential areas, ports and hundreds of boats anchored for fishing and cargo transportation.

Previously, in a document sent to Ho Chi Minh City leaders, Vingroup said that after Ba Ria - Vung Tau province merged into Ho Chi Minh City, the formation of a traffic axis directly connecting the coastal area was an urgent need.

Can Gio and Ba Ria - Vung Tau (old) are considered to be areas with strategic locations in terms of marine economy , ports, tourism and trade. Currently, people travel between the two localities mainly by ferry, taking about 35 minutes per trip.

Investing in the sea-crossing road and bridge will shorten travel time, increase connectivity between functional areas of Ho Chi Minh City, and at the same time create momentum for socio-economic and commercial development and expand urban space towards the sea.

The idea of building a Can Gio sea-crossing bridge was first proposed at the 2017 Can Gio Development Planning Conference by the Ho Chi Minh City Real Estate Association (HoREA). The central area of Can Gio commune was identified as the expected starting point of the bridge if the project is approved for implementation in the near future.

On the local side, in 2019, the People's Committee of Can Gio district (old) proposed to the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City to consider the project of building a sea-crossing bridge connecting Can Gio with Vung Tau, and at the same time building a Can Gio bridge connecting the city center, replacing the current Binh Khanh ferry route.

According to the original idea, the Can Gio - Vung Tau sea bridge is about 17 km long, designed with a clearance of 56 m to ensure international ships can move safely and smoothly.

Can Gio is considered the Southeast gateway of Ho Chi Minh City, playing an important role in the development orientation of the urban - seaport - tourism area. Currently, Vingroup is investing in the Vinhomes Green Paradise Can Gio project with a scale of nearly 2,900 hectares in this area.
