"Optimizing" rush hour traffic signals along Highway 51

In the context of rapid urbanization, traffic congestion at intersections along Highway 51 has become a major challenge.

Faced with that situation, Dong Nai has implemented many solutions, especially reviewing and adjusting the traffic light system at key intersections to optimize traffic flow, bringing clarity and safety to key routes.

Check traffic lights, reduce congestion

The Gate 11 roundabout area (intersection of Bui Van Hoa and Vo Nguyen Giap streets, Long Hung and Phuoc Tan wards) is one of the frequent "congestion points", especially during rush hours, holidays and Tet when vehicles from National Highway 51 and branch routes converge at the same time.

According to the Traffic Safety Committee of Dong Nai province, to resolve the above situation, the authorities have adjusted the green light time to increase, helping vehicles to go straight more conveniently. At the same time, a series of traffic reorganization projects have also been implemented: partially dismantling the roundabout island, redrawing the left-turning lane, dismantling the guide island, adding new paint lines and signs. These changes have expanded the traffic space, significantly reducing "conflicts" between vehicle directions.

Not only stopping at the Gate 11 roundabout, the traffic light system on Highway 51 is also being synchronously reviewed. This vital route currently has 21 traffic lights, including some locations that are frequently congested and have been promptly adjusted.

According to information from the Department of Construction, the intersection of National Highway 51 - Ngo Quyen Street (Km2+200, Long Hung Ward) has increased the green light from 60 seconds to 70 seconds. The intersection of National Highway 51 - Bui Van Hoa (Km5+220, Phuoc Tan Ward) has increased the green light from 39 seconds to 75 seconds. This adjustment has brought about clear results, helping to reduce congestion during rush hours, creating favorable conditions for both people and businesses to travel.

In addition, in some areas through Long Thanh commune and An Phuoc commune, when surveying the current situation and consulting with the traffic police force and relevant agencies, the green light time at some intersections was adjusted from 56 to 61 seconds, including: Km19+200, Km20+200, Km20+900 and Km21+500. However, the adjustment only stops at this level because if increased, the red light time at the turns will exceed 100 seconds, causing local congestion.

Operate according to traffic conditions

According to the Traffic Police Department, Dong Nai Provincial Police, in the first 8 months of 2025, the functional forces coordinated with the Department of Construction and the police of communes and wards to survey and receive 592 traffic light clusters across the province. Of which, the old Dong Nai province received 507 clusters and the old Binh Phuoc province received 85 clusters. This is an important step to synchronize and improve management efficiency after the administrative unit rearrangement.

Lieutenant Colonel Tran Trong Thuy, Head of the Traffic Police Department, Dong Nai Provincial Police, said: To ensure the system operates smoothly, Dong Nai Provincial Police organized a training course for 44 traffic police officers, equipping them with skills in operating, exploiting and controlling traffic lights. Thanks to that, the management capacity is increasingly professional, ensuring the system is operated flexibly, in accordance with the actual traffic situation.

At the same time, the traffic police force also developed traffic diversion plans and arranged forces to directly command at key intersections. In the 8 months of 2025, there were 37 recommendations sent to the authorities to handle inadequacies in traffic organization and promptly fix points with high risk of accidents.

Another highlight is that the Department of Construction has coordinated with Road Management Area IV (Vietnam Road Administration) and local authorities to conduct field inspections and edit information on signboards to suit the situation of administrative units after the merger.

According to the People's Committee of Dong Nai province, recently, the Department of Construction has coordinated with Road Management Area IV (Vietnam Road Administration) and relevant communes, wards and agencies to organize on-site inspections to update and adjust road sign information in accordance with provincial and commune-level administrative units after the arrangement and merger on provincial roads, national highways and expressways through Dong Nai province.

The review and adjustment of the traffic light system at key intersections not only brings immediate results in reducing congestion but also opens up a new direction for traffic management in Dong Nai. With a systematic, scientific approach and synchronous coordination between sectors, the province is gradually building a safe and smooth traffic system, meeting the requirements of socio -economic development in the new period.
