Iran's president-elect to be sworn in in August

Iranian state media reported on July 7 that President-elect Masoud Pezeshkian will be sworn in before Parliament in early August.

After the inauguration ceremony, Mr. Masoud Pezeshkian will become the 9th president of Iran.

“The president’s swearing-in ceremony will be held on August 4 or 5. The president will have 15 days to submit to the parliament a list of his proposed ministers before the body holds a vote of confidence,” said Mojtaba Yosefi, a member of the Iranian parliament’s executive committee.

According to the rules, the president-elect of Iran must swear an oath before the parliament before officially taking office. The oath-taking ceremony takes place after the president-elect receives official endorsement from the supreme leader of the Islamic republic.

In Iran, the president is not the head of state and power rests with the Supreme Leader - a position held by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei for the past 35 years.

Mr Pezeshkian won the July 5 runoff election against conservative candidate Saeed Jalili, to replace the late President Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash in May.

The 69-year-old reformist won with more than 16 million votes, about 54%, while his opponent Mr. Jalili won more than 13 million, about 44%, of a total of about 30 million votes cast.

Iranian newspapers have carried front-page pictures of Mr Pezeshkian and called for unity under the president-elect.
