Ho Chi Minh City adjusts clearance of new bridge over Saigon River to 45m

TPO - Can Gio Bridge (connecting Nha Be and Can Gio districts) will change its design from a single-tower cable-stayed bridge to a double-tower bridge. Thu Thiem 4 Bridge (connecting District 7 and Thu Duc City) with an initial clearance of 10m will also be changed to be able to raise and lower the height of the bridge deck from 15m to 45m.

The above content is mentioned in the report of the Department of Transport of Ho Chi Minh City on the implementation status of the Can Gio Bridge, Thu Thiem 4 Bridge and Ho Chi Minh City Ring Road 4 projects.

Accordingly, regarding the architectural plan of Can Gio bridge, the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee has agreed to adjust the design plan of the single-tower cable-stayed bridge with the architectural idea of outlining the typical mangrove tree of Can Gio district. Currently, the Department of Planning and Architecture is consulting the City People's Committee to adjust the architectural plan of Can Gio bridge before approving the project feasibility study report.

Specifically, the design of the single-tower cable-stayed bridge approved by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee in 2019 will be converted into a two-tower cable-stayed bridge, keeping the architectural concept of the typical mangrove tree shape of Can Gio district.

Can Gio Bridge (connecting Nha Be and Can Gio districts) will change its design from a 1-tower cable-stayed bridge to a 2-tower cable-stayed bridge.

Can Gio Bridge connecting Nha Be district and Can Gio district is 7.3 km long, 6 lanes wide, with a total investment of more than 11,000 billion VND, implemented in the form of public-private partnership (PPP): BOT contract type (build - operate - transfer). The project is expected to start construction in 2025 and be completed in 2028.

Regarding the clearance of Thu Thiem 4 bridge, the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City will coordinate with the Ministry of Transport to unify the railway planning for the Ho Chi Minh City hub area.

Including the option of connecting the North-South high-speed railway with the Ho Chi Minh City-Can Tho railway and the urban space planning along the Saigon River as the basis for selecting the Thu Thiem 4 bridge's navigation clearance plan to ensure economic and technical efficiency and compliance with the planning orientation...

According to the original design, Thu Thiem 4 bridge has a clearance of 10m. This design is considered too low, hindering ships, hindering tourism development, waterway traffic, etc.

Previously, the Department of Transport submitted to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee the results of the pre-feasibility study on the Thu Thiem 4 Bridge construction investment project. The bridge is designed to be able to raise and lower the main span with clearance that can change from 15m to a maximum of 45m. This type of bridge design is said to be unprecedented in our country, helping large ships easily travel on the Saigon River into the city center.

Thu Thiem 4 Bridge connecting District 7 and Thu Duc City is more than 2km long with 6 lanes. The total investment of about 6,030 billion VND is invested under a BOT contract. The project is expected to start construction on April 30, 2025 and be completed in 2028.
