At around 7:30 p.m. on July 31, many central areas of Ho Chi Minh City such as Ban Co Ward, Xuan Hoa Ward, Tan Thuan Ward, An Dong Ward, Binh Hung Commune, etc. suddenly lost power. In the central area of the city, the traffic light system was paralyzed, causing traffic jams on many roads.

Mr. Tran Phuong Duy, a resident of Xuan Hoa Ward, said that he was entering a restaurant on Tran Quoc Thao Street when the power went out. At that time, the restaurant was very crowded because it was the evening rush hour.

“The incident lasted for more than 20 minutes, disrupting the restaurant’s operations. Many customers left, greatly affecting the restaurant’s operations,” said Duy, adding that it had been a long time since such a long power outage had occurred in Ho Chi Minh City.

Ms. Mai Thi Hoa, a resident of Ban Co ward, recounted that while she was having dinner, the power went out, causing her baby to cry and ask to be held. At first, Ms. Hoa thought that only her apartment building had lost power. Unexpectedly, when she walked to Cong Quynh and Pham Viet Chanh streets, she saw that the entire area was dark; only Tu Du Maternity Hospital had lights on. Ms. Hoa said: My apartment building had a power outage, many residents walked out onto the street to breathe easier. Unexpectedly, the shops on both sides of the street were dark, and customers and owners groped their way out onto the sidewalk to sit.

This is the second time Ho Chi Minh City has experienced a widespread power outage. Previously, at noon on July 30, an incident at the 220kV transformer station (formerly in District 8) caused a 30-minute power outage in many areas of the city.

On August 1, speaking with SGGP reporters, Mr. Bui Trung Kien, Deputy General Director of Ho Chi Minh City Electricity Corporation (EVNHCMC), hoped that customers would sympathize with the power outage on the evening of July 31. The Ho Chi Minh City Electricity Industry apologized to the city's residents for the above unavoidable incident, and hoped that customers would sympathize. The cause is being clarified and information will be provided to the people soon.
