Experience honey harvesting in Son Islet

Con Son (Binh Thuy Ward, Can Tho City) has many fruit gardens full of fruit. This is not only a resource for people to develop tourism but also contributes to creating more livelihoods for beekeeping for honey. The experience of harvesting honey at Con Son is a tourist product that helps visitors learn about beekeeping and enjoy products made from natural honey. This is a new activity at Con Son to serve tourists during the upcoming September 2nd holiday.

Each harvesting step is carefully instructed, such as smoking (photo), checking the beehive, honey collection techniques... are shared in detail so that visitors understand the honey collection process.

Mr. Huynh Duc Tuong, shares beekeeping techniques with tourists. Accordingly, the ideal conditions for harvesting honey are sunny season, early morning. In particular, the best time is from March to June when the weather is dry, bee food is abundant, giving good quality honey. Each nest is placed on 8-10 rafters, attracting bees to build nests and create honey. The honey harvesting time is from 15-20 days, when the rafters will be covered with honey.

Visitors are provided with protective equipment, guided tours, and learn about the process of raising honey bees in the orchards on Son Islet.

After being cleaned, the beehives are put into a rotating drum to extract honey. Tourist Huynh Quang Hoai (right) said: “This is the first time I have learned about and harvested honey, a very interesting experience for a new day full of energy. I really like having the opportunity to harvest honey myself and enjoy it in the garden because I can see it with my own eyes and know about the origin of the product.”

When removing the beam from the nest, visitors are instructed to clean the wax to avoid damaging the young bee larvae inside.

Tourist Nguyen Pham Anh Thu (second from left) shared: “This is the first time I have experienced honey collection. It is not as scary as I thought and very interesting. When taking out the beehive and cleaning the wax, the honey comes out very fragrant. The best thing is enjoying the wax and honey right there, very fragrant and sweet.”

Ms. Nguyen The Ngoc (left), Director of Ngan Long Home & Camp Con Son, said: "The experience of harvesting honey is a new product that we are preparing to serve tourists on the occasion of the upcoming September 2nd holiday."

Honey-infused cuisine is featured on the tour. Pictured are honey lotus tea and honey-grilled chicken.
