North Korea tests new generation hypersonic missile engine

Pyongyang has successfully conducted a ground test of a solid-fuel engine for a new generation hypersonic missile.

On March 20, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that the General Department of Rocket and Propulsion Institute under the agency conducted a ground-based test of a multi-stage solid-fuel engine for a medium-range hypersonic missile at the Sohae satellite launch site on the morning and afternoon of March 19 in line with the roadmap for developing a new generation of weapons systems.

Leader Kim Jong Un supervised the on-site test with leading officials in the field of North Korean missile development.

KCNA said a timetable for completing the development of a new-generation medium-range hypersonic missile weapon system has been determined through the success of this important test.

According to KCNA, leader Kim Jong Un assessed the military strategic value of this weapons system as being on par with intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs).
