China spent 1.1 billion USD importing Vietnamese seafood in 6 months

According to the Association of Seafood Processors and Exporters, China has surpassed the US to become the largest importer of Vietnamese seafood in the first 6 months of 2025.

In the first 6 months of 2025, Vietnam's seafood exports to the US reached 905 million USD, an increase of 17.5% over the same period in 2024. According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), this positive growth was mainly driven by the trend of piling up orders in May - the period when businesses from both countries rushed to complete transactions before the US began applying reciprocal taxes from July 9, 2025.

Vietnam's three main product groups, including shrimp, tra fish and tuna, continue to play a leading role in seafood exports to the US market, with a total value in the first six months of the year reaching more than 700 million USD, accounting for 77% of total turnover.

Of which, shrimp exports reached over 341 million USD, up nearly 13% over the same period. In May in particular, shrimp exports to the US increased sharply by 66%, but in June they fell sharply by 36.5%.

Meanwhile, the value of seafood exports to China reached 1.1 billion USD, up 45% over the same period. With this figure, China has officially surpassed the US to become the largest importer of Vietnamese seafood.

According to VASEP, in the coming time, Vietnamese enterprises need to diversify their markets, avoiding over-dependence on the US market. Optimizing the supply chain to minimize costs and logistics risks. In particular, it is recommended that enterprises focus on transparency in traceability and origin of raw materials. At the same time, they should apply more technology and digital transformation from electronic traceability to smart order management to increase the ability to respond quickly to policy and market fluctuations.
