China "blows the whistle" on two social networks for content violations

China has warned and punished two social media platforms, Kuaishou and Weibo, for negative content, pushing for tighter content management on social media.

The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) on September 20 issued a warning and imposed administrative measures on livestreaming platform Kuaishou and social network Weibo for weaknesses in content management.

In two statements, the CAC said it would summon company representatives to explain, issue an official warning and require correction within a specific timeframe.

The agency pointed out that negative content was rampant on trending lists, especially information that exaggerated celebrities' private lives and useless personal stories.

For their part, Weibo and Kuaishou said they have taken the problem seriously and accepted criticism and disciplinary decisions from the authorities.

The two companies have set up a task force to address violations, aiming to thoroughly address issues related to content management. The CAC's tough move comes just a day after China's market watchdog launched an investigation into Kuaigou, Kuaishou's e-commerce unit, on suspicion of violating the country's e-commerce laws./.
