The Chinese Foreign Ministry said the two sides agreed to properly handle important and sensitive issues in US-China relations; pledged that President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden would “maintain regular communication to provide strategic guidance for bilateral relations and make good use of existing strategic communication channels.”

The White House also described the talks as “constructive” and said the two sides agreed to keep communication channels open. Mr. Sullivan said that while the US and China are in a competitive phase, both countries need to avoid shifting to conflict or confrontation; emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.

China and the United States also agreed to set up a joint working group on counter-narcotics and establish an intergovernmental dialogue on artificial intelligence.
