On July 19, 2025, after receiving news of the accident of the tourist ship Blue Bay 58 in Ha Long Bay, under the direction of the Border Guard Command (Quang Ninh Provincial Military Command), Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Van Hieu along with more than 20 officers and soldiers immediately controlled ships and boats to the scene to carry out urgent rescue work. The Provincial Border Guard force coordinated with other functional forces and local authorities to organize search and rescue throughout the night, making efforts to find and rescue the victims... That was one of many cases that Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Van Hieu participated in with the unit in recent years.

Through research we know that year In 2012, after graduating from the Naval Command and Staff major at the Naval Academy, young man Nguyen Van Hieu, Kim Tan commune, Kim Son district, Ninh Binh province (now Dinh Hoa commune, Ninh Binh province) was assigned to work at Border Guard Squadron 2 (Border Guard Command, Quang Ninh Province Military Command) until now.

From a young cadre who had just taken up his duties, to becoming a leader and commander of the unit, Comrade Hieu always strived to complete all assigned tasks excellently. Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Van Hung, Political Commissar of Border Guard Squadron 2, said: “In his position as a Party Committee member and Party Cell Secretary, Comrade Hieu, together with the Party Committee, developed a resolution on studying and following Ho Chi Minh's ideology, morality and lifestyle; organized and seriously implemented it to all cadres and Party members; regularly monitored, inspected and urged the implementation of the contents of the commitment that Party members had registered. As Deputy Squadron Commander, Comrade Hieu, together with the Party Committee and the Squadron Command, led and directed the promotion of emulation and commendation work and the Victory Emulation Movement to ensure seriousness and strictness; closely following the instructions of superiors and in accordance with the actual situation of the unit, successfully completing all border guard tasks”.

Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Van Hieu regularly maintains the unit to strictly implement combat readiness regimes, practice to improve mobility and handle situations; promptly adjust plans and options when situations change, close to reality as a basis for sea protection activities; proactively grasp, assess and accurately forecast the sea situation; advise, propose and promptly and effectively resolve issues related to sovereignty over seas and islands in the area... Do a good job of propaganda and mobilization of fishermen to strictly comply with the Party's guidelines and policies, the State's policies and laws, international agreements, conventions and conventions; build a national border defense posture, encourage fishermen to stay at sea with peace of mind.

“I regularly study, practice, research and improve my knowledge through professional training sessions, through documents and through exchanges with comrades and teammates to grasp and gradually improve my professional and technical qualifications; acquire new knowledge, master science and technology, and modern equipment. In training, along with voluntarily researching and improving my knowledge, I always proactively advise the unit commander to organize practical training content, suitable to the unit's mission situation; prepare documents and practice training on appropriate physical training content... Thereby, contributing to training the health of officers and soldiers, improving their ability to withstand storms during their duties at sea”, Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Van Hieu shared.

Over the past years, officers and soldiers of the Border Guard Squadron 2 have successfully completed their patrol and control tasks at sea, effectively combating crimes, smuggling, trade fraud and illegal activities, preventing illegal entry and exit, maintaining political security and social order and safety in the province's sea areas. Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Van Hieu personally participated in more than 30 long-term patrols at sea, chasing away hundreds of foreign boats and rafts violating the sea area; participating in the arrest of hundreds of cases of smuggling, trade fraud, illegal transportation of goods, use of prohibited tools to exploit aquatic resources...

In the work of natural disaster prevention, search and rescue, Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Van Hieu has demonstrated his responsibility, bravery, and willingness to sacrifice to protect the lives and property of the State, unit, and people. “Implementing plans to prevent and combat storms, I organized and commanded officers and soldiers to do a good job of propaganda and mobilizing people to avoid storms and ensure safety. I personally propagated and mobilized and helped more than 1,600 households to relocate, anchor, anchor ships and overcome the consequences of natural disasters; directly participated in 8 rescue cases, rescued 8 vehicles and 46 crew members in distress at sea. In addition, I also advised the Party Committee and the Fleet Command to lead, direct and regularly maintain mass mobilization and propaganda work, especially at sea, directly participated in propagating the Vietnam Border Law and regulations on fishing for more than 800 vehicles, with 1,150 crew members and fishermen…”, Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Van Hieu added.

Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Van Hung, Political Commissar of Border Guard Squadron 2, added: “In implementing the campaign “Let’s clean the sea”, Comrade Hieu proactively developed a single plan, coordinated with businesses and local organizations twice a month to collect waste and mobilize the masses not to throw waste into the sea to protect the environment. The unit’s activities “Volunteer Saturday”, “Green Sunday”, “Let’s clean the sea”… on Ha Long Bay beach have contributed to raising people’s awareness of environmental hygiene, contributing positively to the development of tourism in Quang Ninh province in recent times”.

With outstanding achievements, from 2016 to 2022, Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Van Hieu achieved the title of Emulation Fighter at the grassroots level and many Certificates of Merit from all levels.
