Billionaire Jeff Bezos' wife's gold-plated Hermès bag costs more than 6.5 billion VND

The designer handbag of Lauren Sanchez - wife of billionaire Jeff Bezos - is attracting a lot of public attention.

In recent weeks, and during her multi-day wedding in Venice last month, Jeff Bezos' wife was spotted carrying an extremely rare version of Hermès' iconic Kelly handbag: the Kelly Midas.

"The name of the bag is inspired by King Midas, a Greek mythological figure who was cursed: everything he touched turned to gold," Daniel Englander, a VIP relations expert at luxury resale site Fashionphile, told Page Six .

The bag itself reflects this legend: the handle is partly crafted from real 18-karat gold and the hardware is also made of solid gold. From the outside, it looks as if King Midas himself has just laid his hands on the bag.

While the original Kelly bag has been around since the 1930s, the gold-plated version was released in 2023. Based on “limited information,” Englander says, a calfskin version retails for around $115,000, while a crocodile-skin bag like Sánchez’s would cost closer to $170,000 at an Hermès store.

But as anyone familiar with French fashion house Hermès knows, only top Hermès customers have the opportunity to purchase handbags (and especially rarer models like the Kelly Midas) in-store.

For others, resale is the best option, which means higher prices. Englander says genuine leather versions of the Kelly Midas can fetch as much as $250,000.

"Lauren is said to have hosted a private shopping event at Hermès for her bachelorette party and it's very possible this bag was purchased at that time. In addition to carrying the Kelly Midas bag to her bachelorette party dinner with Jeff Bezos in Cannes, France, Sanchez also carried it with her Grace Kelly-style Dior dress and Hermès veil to her wedding in Venice, Italy.

Recently, Jeff Bezos' newlywed wife wore this rare design to Paris Haute Couture Week and the Allen & Company Sun Valley Conference - also known as "summer camp for billionaires".
