Informing Tuoi Tre Online on April 16, the leader of the People's Committee of Tay Ho district ( Hanoi ) said that this agency has a specific report on the organization of the Tay Ho Half Marathon 2024 and Kids Run the Earth 2024.
Among them was the case of an athlete who suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed before the 100m finish line.
The male athlete who had the health problem is PBM (born in 1990, from Dong Son, Thanh Hoa ). On April 16, the patient continued to be treated at Bach Mai Hospital in serious condition.
"Through investigation, the patient had a history of high blood pressure for 4 years, regularly treated with Coversyl," the report of Tay Ho District People's Committee stated.
At around 5:55 a.m. on April 14, when discovering that Mr. PBM had collapsed, the emergency team, including Dr. Ngo Tien Thai (Bach Mai Hospital), two cardiologists, an anesthesiologist, and a nurse, examined and assessed the patient's condition. The results showed that the male athlete had stopped circulating.
Medical staff performed first aid such as chest compressions, balloon injection, oxygen therapy, adrenaline injection, and established an IV line. At 6:25 a.m., the patient was transferred to Hanoi Heart Hospital, branch 2, for treatment.
Here, the emergency resuscitation department of the Heart Hospital actively resuscitated and consulted directly with Bach Mai Hospital. Then, the emergency team from Bach Mai Hospital came to provide direct support.
At 12 noon the same day, the patient was put on extracorporeal circulation (ECMO) by the emergency team of Bach Mai Hospital and transferred to Bach Mai Hospital for continued treatment.
Authorities recommend that people need to have a training plan and prepare carefully for health before sports competitions to ensure safety and avoid risks. At the same time, they should not follow the trend to register for a distance beyond their ability.
The 2024 Tay Ho Half Marathon and the accompanying Kids Run the Earth race were held on April 13 and 14. The two races attracted more than 13,000 athletes.
Tay Ho Half Marathon 2024 has 3 distances: 5km, 15km and 21km.
During the event, 14 people needed medical help, 6 of whom needed to be transferred to the hospital for observation. 5 are now in stable condition.
